Handwriting/typing simulator 101 If you take notes, you will likely get an A. The quizzes and tests were fairly easy and very much based on what was already on the slides. There is a lot of assigned reading, but it's never really stuff not covered in lecture: they've realized the reading is dense, though, so they might change stuff on this. Slides are extremely dense, and it makes understanding Getrich hard sadly. She is actually probably the best lecturer I've had so far at UMD, but it's hard to focus when you're writing so much. The concept, immigration, is also extremely important and relevant to our current climate, so it was nice seeing it all. So basically: easy class, really interesting, a bit held back by the density of words

If you write down everything on the slides and do not sleep through your discussion sections, this class will be one of the easiest classes you have ever taken. If you do not, you may run into some issues due to the weighing. Dr. Getrich is very kind, but also very firm, so do not expect to get away with not attending. The quizzes and exams are both very fair.

Good prof and the class is basically a cake-walk, especially considering it fulfills 3 gen-eds. About half of your grade is based on Discussion section activities where prior to discussion you'll have to write ~250-500 word paragraph about some topic in immigration and then participate in discussion based on the assignment. The other 50% of your grade is based on quizzes (which are done on readings before class, 6 in total) and a midterm + Final (both open note but timed and quite dense in the amount of work needed). Overall the class is quite easy the only downside is there's a borderline obnoxious amount of readings to do before each class (upwards of 50-60 pages a class, all quite dense in material) and prof does get angry when she finds out ppl don't read them. Besides that though the class is an easy A if you show up and take quick notes (she does have presentations each class that you should copy down word for word as she doesn't post them later and a lot of the material on the midterm and final are directly from the slides) + there are extra credit opportunities just to ensure you have every chance of success.

Dr. Getrich is an excellent professor. The class material was interesting and relevant, and I actually learned a ton about immigration. She is genuinely excited about the topic and interested in her students' stories. She managed to teach us so much without making her class too difficult or time consuming. One assignment a week, plus the midterm and final, which were both online and open notes.

Dr. Getrich has a very relaxed teaching style. For the most part, this class is a combination of lectures, readings, and discussions. There are about 5 pop quizzes, but even if you don't do too well on them, the discussion assignments more than makeup for your grade. The 12 discussion assignments you have to do make up for 48% of your grade. The discussion assignments are pretty easy, you just need to summarize some articles and sometimes give your opinion on them or connect them to whatever you learned in that week the assignment is due. There is one interesting discussion assignment where you interview U.S. immigrants on their experiences coming to and living in the U.S. The class only has two exams: the midterm and the final. The class fulfills the DVUP, SCIS, and DSHS gen-eds, so this pretty much clears out a lot of gen-eds. Like the review before mine said, you should type up your notes or take pictures of the slides since there isn't enough time to write down everything on Dr. Getrich's PowerPoint slides. Dr. Getrich introduces very interesting perspectives on immigration and is very experienced in regard to immigration, immigrant lives, and everyday activism. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend this class to anyone who's willing to give it a try.

I really like Dr. Getrich's teaching style. She makes immigration concepts extremely interesting. For the readings, there are sometimes pop quizzes announced - which are announced in advance - so make sure to keep up with those. We usually only have one writing assignment a week for the discussion sections and those are around 250-500 words. The workload really isn't that hard. For the lectures, Dr. Getrich does teach from powerpoints - and there are A LOT of words on each slide. Make sure that you are typing up your notes because it is extremely hard to write notes that fast. For the exams, they really aren't that hard. If you are able to go through your notes and the study guide and remember important overarching concepts and important laws/concepts, you will do great.

Dr. Getrich is a very smart and experienced teacher regarding immigration and immigrant lives. She chose really great readings and films for this class and explains everything so well that I was more prepared for her midterm and final exam than any other class at UMD. The workload is not too heavy; one discussion post per week and a couple readings to do before lectures. I wish I could take every immigration class with her.
