Jacob is a super great guy and this class is definitely worth taking. I am electrical engineering so I didn't really understand everything going on in this AOSC class but he made the assignments fairly easy and office hours helped a lot with them. The final paper wasn't that bad either. The workload is pretty light and you can get a lot of help on it all so it is fairly easy to get an A. |

Excellent professor. You will not be disappointed. No exams and cruise trip at the end of semester. |

I am not an AOSC major, so I found the physics and calculus in this course very challenging. HOWEVER, there are no exams and he encourages you to collaborate on the homework, making the class easy to do well if you befriend a few smart people and/or go in for office hours. Although I didn't quite understand the math, Jacob explains the general physics concepts very well and he puts a lot of effort into his presentations, making sure to place as many videos/gifs of models so you can understand the material better. If you are expecting more geomorphology components of the Chesapeake Bay, this course is not necessarily for you, as it's basically a physical oceanography class in the context of the Chesapeake Bay. Jeacob is super kind and passionate about oceanography, and he is willing to help his students whenever he can. He also organized a fantastic field trip on the R/V Carson, where we took multiple CTD measurements and a sediment core sample. As someone who is not interested in math or physics, he did a great job making it seem interesting, and I learned a lot in this course. |

Jacob is hands down, the best professor I have had at UMD. He is very nice, understanding, and lenient with his students. The class was so interesting, it being the first time it has been offered. Jacob's lectures were nice to follow along, he'd explain each graph, diagram, image, etc. pretty well. When it came to mathematical concepts in lecture or in homework, he would solve it out with us on the board to help us understand it, step by step. Class consisted of 5 homework assignments, discussion board posts, and a research paper. I learned a lot about the local oceanography of the Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding waters. Take this class when it is offered again! |
