Special Topics in Arabic Studies; Arabic Literature in Translation

This course covers a variety of Arabic literary, cinematic, visual, virtual and other cultural material that is based on autobiographical storytelling. We will explore the issues of personal and collective identities in these works, focusing on the relationship between the individual and their society. Questions of nationalism, religious fundamentalism, Islamic feminism, and various socio-cultural movements will be discussed from the perspective of individual identity-making. Taught in English.
