Selected Topics in Architectural History; Architect and Engineer: Professionalization and Separation

This course examines the historical process by which Architecture and Engineering came to be the two separate professions they are today. It is a history which gives an understanding of the position of architects today. It will give each individual a chance to contemplate the effect of a professional education. We begin with examples of ancient architectural monuments, questioning what roles the makers could have played. Next we look at written works about building. The growth of professional education from the 17th to the 19th in western Architecture and Engineering is the major concentration of the course. The education of the professional in this last period produced the profound separation between architect and engineer in the modern period. As a member of this class, you will examine how this history may affect your own professional choices.
