Selected Topics in Architectural History; Islam in Africa: Architecture and Culture

Prerequisite: ARCH225/ARCH226 or eqivalent. This seminar introduces students to the architecture of Muslim societies in north, west, and east Africa. We cover the medieval and early modern periods, the impact of European colonialism, and Africa since independence. A particular focus is how architecture and religious practice inform one another, and how they are shaped by local, regional, and global networks and ideas. Students should ideally have some background in architectural and/or art history.
