After considering Chinese art in the Euro-American imagination through the writings of Roger Fry, Franois Jullien, and Marianne Moore, and theartworks by Henri Michaux, Robert Motherwell, and Brice Marden who were inspired by Chinese art, the seminar will explore such critical concepts as cosmopolitanism, cultural politics, diaspora, transnationalism, and visuality as seen through artists in the Chinese diaspora such as Maya Lin, Ai Weiwei, Cai Guoqiang, Chuang Che, Gao Xingjian, Huang Yao, and Zao Wou-ki.
