Very funny and genuine guy, actually wants you to start a business and tries his best to give you the tools you need to start it. However, because he's focusing on giving you advice rather than preparing you for an exam, he should either change the content of the exams or not have them altogether. The team project and interview with an entrepreneur alone should suffice. The Business Model You project is also kind of frivolous. I don't regret taking this class but I think there are better DSSP/SCIS classes to take.

Do NOT take his BMGT298E class I disagree with the review below me! While a nice person, he is a horrible lecturer. He had given 3 projects in the semester and were all busy work to fill this I-Series credit. The project that takes the whole semester is the team project. At the end of it he had never graded it at all for any of my classmates in the group. Even though we had turned it in almost a week early. He has ghosted me in emails regarding this topic. On top of that the other project is to interview an entrepreneur. If you interview one that has a Google page/wikipedia pop up and a networth of a high accord within owning/creating the business he will give you an A regardless of how you do on other assignments. DO NOT waste your time doing this as he will not give you an A. I will be contacting the dean of the business school regarding both projects as this is unacceptable as it could have gotten me an A.

I took this course and have to disagree with the reviews. The lectures are a bit all over but the material on the slides was on the exams. I also thought his connecting the concepts to real world examples was nice. I greatly enjoyed this class and working with Dr. Schalke. Also, he gives you 15 weeks to finish 3 medium difficulty assignments at your own pace. I'd say that is fair.

seems like a good dude, and the guy does seem like he cares about what he teaches, but most of the review on here are right. His lectures are all over the place and don't really provide anything useful. His midterms don't really have much to do with the contents of each class and questions seem very arbitrary. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone looking for an easy A or anyone trying to learn anything.

please do not take his class. Never grades stuff and keeps it until the last moment, and his lectures are boring and you would never know how to study for a test. All his big assignments were due in the last week instead of a organized professor who has things due every now and then. Please do yourself a favor and dont take him.

useless class and a useless professor. Ig he's nice and all, but honestly all he does is talk about random life experiences that are all basically the same message repeated over and over. The exams are not at all about what he talks about it class and overall attending class was a bore. The work was really easy but one of the stupidest waste of time and tuition ever. Would not recommend, take a different class where you can actually learn something.

These reviews are harsh... I am a kinesiology major who took this class as a gen ed. This professor was honestly one of my favorite professors; he really cared about everyone in the class. He brings great energy to the class. Although it is kind of a lot of work for a gen ed you have a lot of time on assignments and they are not difficult. You know about the projects at the beginning of the semester and can work on them during the semester. I recommend this course.

Professor Schlake is a nice guy, but he kind of just rambles on in class and doesn't really teach the actual content, and the actual content is on the exam. The exams are pretty much impossible to study for and is just worded and organized in a very confusing way. There are 3 big projects, that are all due on the same date, and he releases them on the same day. One is a team project, which is the biggest grade, and the other 2 are individual. The project instructions are also very confusing so is the grading. If you do what he asks you to do, he'll give you an 85, so you have to do a lot more in order to get an A. Overall, if you are really interested in becoming an Entrepreneur, then take the class Schlake could definitely help you, but if you're looking for an easy gen ed, do not take this class.

He's very kind and cares a lot about his students, but the lectures don't contain anything helpful. This made exams and projects very difficult. There's a huge group project that we barely go time to work on in class. There were also 2 other really big projects and the final exam all in the span of like 2 weeks. Definitely a stressful class.

My least favorite class of the semester. The lectures are common sense formulations combined with the professors personal experience. He does not grade anything until after the semester has ended, makes you do work after the semester has ended, and does not respond to messages. Gave me an 88% on a major project with zero comments or recommendations. Considering this is a class for non-business majors that are most likely signed up for a gen ed, find a different one to take.

He is the worst grader ever. None of the information is applicable and he waited past the deadline to release all the grades so you have no idea how you’re doing the entire semester until it’s too late. Grades way too harshly and is bad at communicating. Questions on exams are ridiculous and it’s impossible to prepare for them. Do not take him

Writing this review right after I took the final exam. Nothing in this course is practical what so ever. I'd argue that all that was taught was a few of Schlake's own life experiences with a few corporate buzz words sprinkled in for good measure. He doesn't respond when you try and contact him. Hell, the TA was my buddy, and he would bitch about how Schlake wouldn't even respond to him. I genuinely have no idea what my grade for the class is going to be, because the only grades that have been released as of 3 days into finals week are 4 discussion posts. Do yourself a favor, find yourself another GenEd/support course.

Honestly, nothing really goes on in the class and everything is easy, but lectures are boring. The only good times lectures occur are when it's presentations at the end of the semester and maybe the first lecture of the class.

Not a lot of actual information learned in the lectures. They are very boring. He grades everything at the end of the semester so you have no clue how you're doing in the class the whole time. Just make sure to actually participate in the group projects and study the slides before the exam.

I was not a fan of this class. I took it as a Gen Ed class and was hoping for some practical business knowledge. Instead it was basically the professor talking about his own life experiences and a few world examples. He waits until the last moment for grades and isn't clear with why you got certain grades. The midterm/ final wasn't great for me because it's all multiple choice trivia, so it's easy to miss a few questions and end with a C or low B for the exam portion.

He's a cool guy but his lectures can be very boring. The way he organizes his projects can be very confusing and unclear at times. However, what I dislike the most about his course is that the midterm/final is more-or-less similar to trivia from past discussions. Overall, if you try to put in effort you can manage an easy A.

The nicest professor I have ever had. Don't listen to any of these bad reviews, he does wait to grade until pretty late and is not super clear about everything he wants done, but he is very flexible with due dates, responds quickly, and is very attentive and responsive to students concerns. He extended deadlines, changed assignments, and was always available in office hours and by appointment to help students. He emphasized his support for business ideas and encouraged students to pursue their ideas and keep in contact with him after the class ended for recommendation letters and anything else we might need. With the exception of some confusing classes and unclear expectations for some assignments, he is an amazing teacher and you can definitely expect an A if you try at all.

Schlake's a funny guy to talk to, but his class was organized horribly, and his lectures were pretty boring. Maybe it's just the content of the course, which feels so much like "common sense" that you rarely ever feel like you're actually learning something new. His grading seems really arbitrary and he's not at all transparent about it. I managed an A but it was definitely not an easy A.

There are a lot of group projects but he gave us time to work with our group during class times. The midterm was graded much harder than any of the work leading up to it and had some trick questions so that came as a shock but everything else was graded pretty fairly. Jonathan Aberman is overall an excellent teacher who loves helping his students learn even if it isn't on topic. He talked about politics a lot just because he thought it was important for us to be informed! I really appreciated how much he cared about us. He often cancelled classes or let us out early and was very understanding about everything. This is not a difficult class. I do not recommend it if you are hoping to learn how to start a business (it is a class for non business majors) but if you just want to learn a little about business I think it is a great and easy way to start.

Professor is very wrapped up in his outside work. He obviously has extensive background with the subject matter but cannot cleanly translate it into teaching ability. For such a right winged conservative, his belief in personal responsibility in the classroom is lacking as far as grading is concerned. Group projects dominate the grading scheme, leaving individuals with a lack of control over their own grade. A fun class. BMGT289E was not very informative, though. Targeted for very elementary students, not those who want to learn.
