I am currently in this class for the Fall 2024 semester, and I must say, I have been impressed with how far I have come and it is only October 8th. I came into the class with a very basic understanding of IB and PE, however, I am already beginning to get super-fast with excel, comfortable building financial models (I built an IS from scratch in under 10 minutes for the pop quiz last week), and now i'm building a funds flow which has helped everything start to "click" for me. I am happy I've taken this class and can't wait for the rest of the semester! I'm not necessarily sure what grade I will get in this class, but my grade is improving - I had a slow start. |

If you have the chance to take this course I would highly recommend it as the professor is very down to earth, helps your find a job via introductions (helped me secure my internship) and he tells you things that honestly other professors would be afraid to tell you about the soft skills needed to be successful on the job such as “under promise and over deliver” |

I have to say, this course is one in which you get out of it what you put into it. The TA for the course when I took it had a full-time IB offer from JP Morgan and apparently this class helped him to secure it. I got a lot out of this class because I aspire to work on Wall Street so I took the self-learning assignments pretty serious and can now build a full three statement LBO model from scratch and a full IC memo. I had no idea how to really do that before taking this class lol. The key to this class is to realize that the professor is trying to prepare us for it's really like on the job, and apparently on the job we will have to be very resourceful. When I first started this class, I didn't really know where to find a lot of the information to complete the IC Memos, but by the midterm I have to say somehow, I became extremely good at tracking down transaction details and financial information for private companies that isn't easy to find. Honestly, this class has prepared me for a job on Wall Street more than any other course I have taken at the University of Maryland, College Park. That's because the class is taught by a real private equity professional who does this work on the day-to-day basis, and he is very transparent about what it takes to get the job. I definitely recommend this class if you are SERIOUS about working on Wall Street and committed. If you aren't actually interested in working on Wall Street there may be more work than you'd like, and you won't be motivated to do the work. FYI - I'll be working in NYC as an IB analyst when I graduate thanks to this class and warm introductions the professor made on my behalf! |

Beware. This class should be easy to pass with all assignments just being completion grades as the grade data reflects, but it is a joke. Out of the 15-16 in person classes we were suppose to have this semester, we went to about 4 of them. The typical week would consist of him canceling in person class a couple hours before class and sending out a huge LBO financial modeling assignment on canvas due that night. As long as you turned in something legible you get points for it. For the couple in person classes we had, they consisted of professor cold calling random students out of the audience to be interviewed in front of the entire class with hardball finance and accounting questions, along with a random 1-2 people being cold called to present their IC Memo powerpoint that they created throughout the week. For both of these things, almost nobody was well prepared and so they all fumbled through the interviews and ppt presentations. Professor rarely responded to emails as he is some kind of vp at a private equity firm and so very busy. Not even the TA had a clue as to what was going on. The whole class was definitely one of my strangest experiences at UMD, but seemingly easy A for most. |
