Dr. Shapiro is one of the best professors that I have had while attending UMD. I would highly recommend any of his classes if you have the opportunity to take them. I have taken both BSCI366 and BSCI160 with Dr. Shapiro and I have ZERO complaints on his teaching style or exams. I really enjoyed the content of this course and Dr. Shapiro's choices in outlining this course. BSCI366 aims to go into significant depth on several animal physiology topics and I really feel that after finishing this course I have a very good understanding of the content covered. In terms of the mid-term exams, as long as you attend class and take sufficient notes you will be completely fine for the exams. Dr. Shapiro's exams aim to allow you to demonstrate a clear understanding of the content covered in this course and there are no tricks on these exams. Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Shapiro's class and would definitely look to take more of his courses if I can. I am completing this course with a clear understanding of topics in animal physiology and truly enjoyed attending each class over the course of the semester because of how much Dr. Shapiro cares for his students and the content being taught. |

Dr. Shapiro was a great professor and definitely the best professor I have had for an ecology class. He was clearly very interested in the material and wanted students to succeed. he offered to meet with anyone who did not do well on his exam to see how they could improve, and he provides practice problems before each exam and he uses some of them on the exam. He also curved the two midterms by 6-8 points if he thought that the average was too low. He also is very understanding about mistakes, and will accept things late or change due dates for the whole class if you just email him about it. He does a few quizzes throughout the semester that are pretty are a good way to see if you understand the material because they are low stakes. The class was weighted heavily on exams with 300/350 points being from exams, but all the other assignments are meant to help you with understanding and if you do them he gives you full credit. most of them were either the quizzes or in class paper discussions where he has you fill out questions before. There was no homework for the class and the quizzes and paper discussions were not very time consuming so other than studying for exams, the class was not very time consuming. He does not record but everything you need to know for quizzes and exams are on the slides. I sometimes found it hard to pay attention in class because I took the class right after lunch, but if you take the time to look at his slides you can easily understand everything you need to know. He also goes over more complicated topics more than once, and tries to explain it in multiple ways so you can understand it. Going to class was helpful but he does not take attendance so if you don't go to class its okay. He offered two midterms and a final that was cumulative but heavily weighted on new material after the second exam. I got a 100 on both exams and all I did to study was go through the slides and do his practice exams. The exams are half fill in the blank and multiple choice but every question is directly from the slides, and then the other half is open response where he basically just takes graphs from the slides and asks you to explain what they are showing. 10/10 would recommend taking this class, especially if you are looking for an easy and interesting upper BSCI elective. It is definitely a lot of information, but easy to succeed if you give yourself enough time to study for each exam. |
