This has been one of my favorite classes at UMD. Carleton is the sweetest teacher and just wants everyone to learn. This class was about global change so it can get pretty sad and she always made sure to include something positive to keep spirits up. The class had no exams, each week we would read the "meet the data" of one paper and submit our predictions and then read the paper and go over it in class. There was a semester long project about a species of our choice and each week you would skim 2-3 papers and submit a summary. All of the work is MAYBE 1 hour per week of work and it s all graded for credit. She is so sweet that it makes you actually want to put in effort for the assignment. There is a final paper about that species but that is the only work for the whole class. this is an 11/10 option for an upper level BSCI credit. She is always open to talk about anything, and by the structure of the class she gets to know each student so would be a great option for a letter of recommendation for grad school/jobs. i would definitely recommend taking this class if you are able. The information was super interesting and interacting and its a light course work but you gain a lot of knowledge and experience with reading scientific papers |

For a bit of context, I took BSCI 207 with Carleton also few semesters back and thought she was kind but did not really interact with her too much until 426. She is literally the best professor at UMD and genuinely probably one of the best people also. Carleton cares about her students so much and sincerely wants the best for us, many of us were seniors who had jobs and grad school offers rescinded and she would constantly be checking in with us about how we were doing with the news and current events. If you have the opportunity to take any class with her, please do it will probably change your life. BSCI 207 takes a bit of study but that is just because the course is really content heavy and Carleton does her best to make it manageable. On the other hand, BSCI 426 is one of my favorite classes I've taken at UMD. Carleton acknowledges that most of the students are seniors and busy so she tries to make it so low stress and as little work as possible. No exams, only a paper and presentation throughout the semester. Carleton deserves all the stars and good reviews, genuinely such a kind professor and person and runs a wonderful classroom environment. |
