Professor Salem's class has to be one of the most interesting classes I have taken at UMD. His knowledge of the topic is great because he is a federal prosecutor. His class is certainly not the easiest, but there is a natural grading curve and the final project helps. He really seems to care about his students and integrates cases that he has worked on into the course material. I would highly recommend this class if you are genuinely interested in learning about different types of crimes and how they're evolving in the U.S. |

Professor Salem is a friendly, uber knowledgeable professor. Don’t let the other reviews scare you. His upper level course, CCJS418D, was more immersive than any other CCJS course I’ve taken. He discusses everything from R Kelly, to rap lyrics used in criminal trials, to Theranos. With each relevant topic, Professor Salem captured my attention and explained, in detail, a variety of legal implications. Is the class structured like other CCJS courses? No. Is it difficult? Yes. But… that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it. There are more than enough opportunities to excel in this course, starting with the pop quizzes. There are 5 total, one every 2-3 weeks. They are 1 question. You have a minute to respond. And while that seems daunting, it’s not if you pay attention to and understand the lecture material. There’s no homework, no outside readings, just lecture. And the midterm exam and final project were very fair, and there’s a natural grading curve. Overall, take this course if you really want to learn about new evolving legal issues. You won’t be disappointed. |
