Take this. Teacher is great, class is great. It is a light workload (movie + short story for the week & a short discussion post sharing your thoughts on the material) Lectures are for understanding- there is no test or timed assessment in this class. However, attendance is mandatory bc there are polls (pollev) to be done in class for a grade (it's opinion-based, so even if you write 'I didn't like the movie' or 'I don't think so' you'd still receive credit.) The two big projects (Rabbit hole (personal interest in class material) video + leading a class discussion) are graded easily- if you do it you get full points. Extra credit is sprinkled throughout the semester, if you need it. One was done during class time, on the last day! Overall, this class prioritizes learning and interest over strict grades. Professor He is personally interested in this area (film), so if you like the topic even just a little bit, I think you'll find the class very fun! Discussion and talking is encouraged!

Please do not take this class as your Gen-ed!!!!!! The materials are very interesting and solid. Prof. Liu is good at telling stories and analyzing the background. However, It is way too difficult for non Chinese major students. We have to write articles with strong argument every week, and we always get 0/5 if it is not satisfying. The grades are so poor, even for midterm and final paper. She gives a curve finally and the total grade is not too bad.
