Professor Urzua is a strict professor. His classes are heavy on lectures, and attendance is mandatory to understand what is happening in class. I urge you to go to his office during office hours and ask questions in class. Two problem sets involved using STATA, which is code-heavy, but you can work on them in a group of two. He treats his assignments like in a real-life workplace, using real-world data, which gives them an aspect you don't get in many other classes. You are allowed to pick your topic for your research paper, and it was quite enjoyable learning about poverty, discrimination, and other economic aspects of another nation. He curved the class average to a B- which was very helpful in passing the class. He is not a professor if you want to be lazy, but if you are willing to work, you can learn a lot from his class.

He is a very good lecturer — super engaging, writes on the board often, always asks if anyone has questions and will spend time reexplaining concepts if people don't understand. That being said, he takes a sort of pride in his class being harder than it should be, which can get a bit annoying. The problem sets require Stata skills that he does not really go over in class and take about 10 hours each to complete, but they are graded pretty fairly and we were given about 3 weeks to work on each one. The first exam was unnecessarily long and complicated, but the final was much easier with mainly repeat questions from the problem sets and even the first exam. The exams were a lot of graph interpretation and barely any technical questions. The research project was super open-ended and basically a curve for the class with no one getting below a 90, which was nice. Overall, it is an interesting class but don't take it if you want a chill 300-level econ course and don't want to self-learn Stata.

Econ 375 is without a doubt the worst class you will ever take. There are two problem sets where you have to use STATA, which is coding. He grades the exams like he's a menace.

good professor for 375; lectures are very clear and well made, and exams are relatively fair (as long as you have background knowledge/did the readings, and finished the practice exams). he does expect a bit more dedication than a lot of students would expect for a 3 credit 300 level class, but it's manageable unless you're taking a lot of credits that semester - think of it as 3.5 credits when registering. problem sets using STATA are a bit of a hassle, and unless you start as soon as he releases them and ask questions at office hours, you might have to pull an all-nighter or two to submit them in an acceptable condition. they're not as bad as they might seem on the surface, though, so do some basic work on each problem early on. in-class assignments are also a bit demanding, as they're not consistently scheduled and are in the first few minutes of class, but the content itself is based entirely on content from the previous class/week.
