Maybe I just thought Prof Anisimov was OK because my frame of reference is skewed by negative experiences with thermo in undergrad, but this class really wasn't so bad, and I thought Prof Anisimov did a good job of getting through a pretty large amount of content intelligibly in ~15 weeks. Lectures are pretty decently organized and the professor proceeds on every topic in a sequential sort of logical way, though sometimes he can move quite quickly. The class is derivation heavy, but usually he emphasizes the physical meaning behind the ten trillion partial derivative operators you will see, and connects the math back to what is actually happening. Thermo is a tough topic to wrap your mind around. He's sort of imposing, but his answers to questions aren't bad. He will also go on tangents sometimes, on applications of thermo (how decaf coffee is made for example) or other things, as someone who was educated in the USSR in the 1950's then came to the states he's got lots of interesting observations. He's one of those professors who's met a ton of famous academics. Quizzes can be pretty difficult but are open laptop, so that helps. No exams (that's worth 3 stars right there lol). Homeworks are the hardest part of his class and can be VERY tough IMO, though some students spent way less time on them than me. For a decent chunk of them office hours is basically mandatory. Final project, which is 2-3 weeks, is basically the same amount of work as 2-3 homeworks combined, so honestly I wasn't excessively stressed while I was doing it, even though it's pretty long. Warning: he plays favorites and has force curved people down on the final project. (This is not speculation by the way... this is very well known by all the ENCH grad students.) Overall not the best professor I've ever had, but not a terrible professor either.
