Do not take her class. She is a horrible teacher and consistently spent time on useless topics. She is also an extremely harsh grader, especially for an intro-level class. She is a very nice lady, but up there with one of the worst teachers I've had.

She's a great professor who actually knows her material really well. I don't think its that hard to get an A in her class as long as you put effort and show up to class. There is a bit of work load but I think that applies to every Engl101 class. She's really generous with assignment due dates and is very understanding of her students. Class is informative and I learned a lot and really enjoyed class. Overall great class with greay prof.

Great Passionate Professor! I think it wasn't that hard to get an A if u are willing to put effort to the course and attend class regularly. There is a bit of workload, but I think that's for every Engl101 class. She is very generous with late assignments and is open to talk with her students! Class is very informative and also fun. One of the classes that I learned alot from. Over all great class and professor to learn from :)

Decent prof. Some other people might have problems with her but I dont really see anything bad from her. The class is pretty easy, as long as you follow her grading rubric, you will get an easy A. Attendance are not mandatory but make sure u attend peer reviews and other graded classwork assignments cuz they count toward ur class participation grade. I used to read the hw assignments, but I just stopped and started skipping class instead cuz they dont really help you too much lol.

Shes not bad. She hold grudges against people, and does not give extensions except if more then 3 students asked for it. I asked ones for an extension on an assignment she replied saying to just submit what i have and its okay since its a draft then ended up going from A+ to C+. I was able to fix my grade later on but if you were going to harsh grade on a draft then just give an extension. Other then that you dont have to do much work the class was pretty easy also she asks for sm reading but you dont have to do it you can just go to class and get a simple idea on the reading and you would be able to answer every question she asks. Attendance isnt mandatory, and she has her final which is a paper pretty early so you dont have to worry abt the class during finals week. I wrote the final paper in one day and got a B+ so dont worry about the paper too. I was worried abt the peer review where she made it seem serious but its just some bs you write on the others person paper and ur done. Overall shes great, not much work to put in the class, but no extensions so lock in for the due dates. Bonus, she doesnt care if you submit an assignment late as long as you submit before she grades it, i was late for two days on an assignment and got an A. Oh also if u r going to skip class DO NOT and i repeat DO NOTT email her just skip.

Dr. Salako is a nice and charming person but once I started the class, it is one of the most unorganized classes that I have ever taken. My section especially because most of my classmates were some of the most annoying and talkative people I have ever met, especially this one kid that would talk ALL THE TIME (you know who you are) and Dr. Salako would ENABLE them and it was to the point where we were spending valuable class time on stupid topics that some of my classmates would bring up that was off topic on what we were trying to do in class which was why my section in particular was behind(even though she said to us that we were ahead of the other sections which was a LIE) and why we basically had 3 homeworks and 2 projects put onto our shoulders at the end of the semester. It felt like I was in high school again. In addition, Dr. Salako is such a harsh grader to the point where I had gotten points taken off my homework assignments because I didn't write down the questions even though it did not say to write down the questions PLUS I numbered the questions and answered them. She also changes due dates all the time which I necessarily did not mind because it gave extra time if you needed it. Also, she does not know how to use canvas. There was multiple times where our grades were screwed up and I had to consistently tell her that she gave us the incorrect grade and she would always have to fix it which was annoying. Overall, this class was the worst and hardest classes that I have taken this semester for an English 101 class, AN ENGLISH 101 CLASS!?!?! PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER! As the review below me said, you are a wonderful person, teaching isn't for everyone.

I took this course over the summer with Professor.DarouieHaghighi and she was not the best teacher. There were often mistakes in her syllabus or assignment directions that I would constantly point out. Her grading is inconsistent. I received a low grade on a draft, even though it was a practice draft then had to email her to convince her to fix my grade to which she was very condescending. It is easy to do well you will need to stay on top of her, and do not be afraid to advocate for yourself.

I have never gone out of my way to write a review for any professor, good or bad. However, with Dr. Salako, I feel like I have to warn her possible future students, DO NOT TAKE HER. I don't feel like getting into details too much, but I can promise that if you have her as your professor, you will stress about this class way more than you might expect. She is genuinely frustrating to communicate with and she displays a lack of respect for students' time inside and outside of the classroom, as she consistently arrived late to class almost everyday, and set oddly timed assignment deadlines that she might decide to change. Just read some of the other reviews on this forum and you can see why I said, DO NOT TAKE HER.

This class is the definition of cooked. Participation points are huge parts of your grade, but you don't know when they will be counted, so you can't really ever miss class. The workload of the class is relatively insane for an entry level English class, as you basically have 2-3 papers/assignments due every week, along with the class time assignments you have as well. Dr. Salako is a good person, but I'm pretty sure she's convinced that everyone in the class is an English major and this class is the most important one you will ever take. All that said though, if you can navigate between the confusing directions and actually complete your work the correct way, she's a pretty easy grader and it's not hard to get a B or higher in the class. Again though, it's a basic level English class, and by no means is taking Dr. Salako the move.

Never have I had to deal with such an incompetent professor in terms of communication, preparedness, technological skills, and basic interaction. She is very rude to students in class essentially in what is just a power trip, as well as finding amusement and entertainment in the students appearances, accents, and abilities. She rambles and contradicts herself in class to the point of confusion, and becomes angered with the class when we become confused due to her horrific communication skills. She ridicules students who are coming in late yet strolls into class extremely late herself. In a class based on developing writing skills she stunts academic growth through excessive constraints to the assignments to the point that writing an essay is just plugging in bullet points to a template to meet a word count. She picks favorites in class and caters to them exclusively. You will find her tying every discussion she has going back to her experience in getting a masters degree. Dr. Salako really showed me that absolutely anybody can get and maintain a doctorate. If you want to maintain your sanity do not take any class of hers.

I can tell that this class was one of the best classes I took at UMD, and I believe that this is because of Dr. Williams. She teaches the material from the bottom of her heart, she wants all her students to learn and do good in the course. There are five major assignments, and in each one of them, Dr. Williams spends enough time explaining what she expects us to do. She grades all assignments fairly and provides constructive feedback. She gives us drafting time before submitting each assignment in which we can write our first draft and ask her any questions about it. Her office hours are very helpful. She understands that we have other courses, and she gives extensions if we need. All what I can say is that I myself was so afraid of this course, since I am an international student, and English is not my first language, but now I am glad that I took this course with Dr. Williams. I struggled many times, but she was the main reason behind developing and improving my writing. So, if you have to take this course, just take Dr. Williams without any hesitation. As for the workload, it is heavy. This class requires a decent time, like 8-10 hours a week. There are discussion boards, drafts, in-class activities, peer reviews, reflections, and of course the major assignments. But all of them are helpful, and I guarantee you will see an improvement in your writing by the end of the semester. Just do your work, no more, no less.

She's a cool professor, but I wasn't too crazy about how she grades stuff. It's kinda tough, and you really gotta put in the work to do well in her class. On the bright side, she's chill about deadlines and gives us a 24-hour grace period for all assignments (except the final), no questions asked. I submitted a few assignments late and I still got full credit.

She does not teach, gives unfair grading, arrives 10 minutes late every lecture, is clueless half the time, makes instructions more confusing than it should be.

Absolute horrible professor. She goes to class 10 minutes late and has the audacity to mark students tardy. She does not teach at all and gives unclear instructions for assignments. Her grading is basically random since she herself don’t understand the assignment.

Great teacher who actually wants you to succeed in her class. The class is challenging and requires a lot of consistent work but if you ask for help she will not hesitate to guide you through something you don't fully understand. Professor wants you to learn rather than just get a passing grade and she will take the time to teach you. Flexible deadlines with the possibility of extension (for good reasons) were another great part of her course.

Really flexible teacher with regard to deadlines. You can submit up to 3-4 hours after a deadline and you'll be fine. Although, ENGL101X is a tough course Dr. Williams does her best to help you. I would advise you to go to her office hours to see what is expected in the assignments. Make sure to read her rubric carefully. The average grade in my class with consistent work is about a B+.

Will is an awesome professor. He makes everything fair. There are not too much assignments. And he did teach me a lot. Also, because he asked us to "socialize", I also made a lot friends in his class. BTW, I'm not an English native speaker, but he is very patient although sometimes I may have horrible pronunciation.

Worked super hard during the semester and got an A-. A tough grader, but a nice guy. He would give you a lot of help on your papers if you asked for it.

Dr. Tillam is really kind and helpful, always cares about his students. He's not a hard grader at all, check his grading data and take his course. :)
