I took this course over the summer with Professor.DarouieHaghighi and she was not the best teacher. There were often mistakes in her syllabus or assignment directions that I would constantly point out. Her grading is inconsistent. I received a low grade on a draft, even though it was a practice draft then had to email her to convince her to fix my grade to which she was very condescending. It is easy to do well you will need to stay on top of her, and do not be afraid to advocate for yourself. |

I have never gone out of my way to write a review for any professor, good or bad. However, with Dr. Salako, I feel like I have to warn her possible future students, DO NOT TAKE HER. I don't feel like getting into details too much, but I can promise that if you have her as your professor, you will stress about this class way more than you might expect. She is genuinely frustrating to communicate with and she displays a lack of respect for students' time inside and outside of the classroom, as she consistently arrived late to class almost everyday, and set oddly timed assignment deadlines that she might decide to change. Just read some of the other reviews on this forum and you can see why I said, DO NOT TAKE HER. |

This class is the definition of cooked. Participation points are huge parts of your grade, but you don't know when they will be counted, so you can't really ever miss class. The workload of the class is relatively insane for an entry level English class, as you basically have 2-3 papers/assignments due every week, along with the class time assignments you have as well. Dr. Salako is a good person, but I'm pretty sure she's convinced that everyone in the class is an English major and this class is the most important one you will ever take. All that said though, if you can navigate between the confusing directions and actually complete your work the correct way, she's a pretty easy grader and it's not hard to get a B or higher in the class. Again though, it's a basic level English class, and by no means is taking Dr. Salako the move. |

Never have I had to deal with such an incompetent professor in terms of communication, preparedness, technological skills, and basic interaction. She is very rude to students in class essentially in what is just a power trip, as well as finding amusement and entertainment in the students appearances, accents, and abilities. She rambles and contradicts herself in class to the point of confusion, and becomes angered with the class when we become confused due to her horrific communication skills. She ridicules students who are coming in late yet strolls into class extremely late herself. In a class based on developing writing skills she stunts academic growth through excessive constraints to the assignments to the point that writing an essay is just plugging in bullet points to a template to meet a word count. She picks favorites in class and caters to them exclusively. You will find her tying every discussion she has going back to her experience in getting a masters degree. Dr. Salako really showed me that absolutely anybody can get and maintain a doctorate. If you want to maintain your sanity do not take any class of hers. |

I can tell that this class was one of the best classes I took at UMD, and I believe that this is because of Dr. Williams. She teaches the material from the bottom of her heart, she wants all her students to learn and do good in the course. There are five major assignments, and in each one of them, Dr. Williams spends enough time explaining what she expects us to do. She grades all assignments fairly and provides constructive feedback. She gives us drafting time before submitting each assignment in which we can write our first draft and ask her any questions about it. Her office hours are very helpful. She understands that we have other courses, and she gives extensions if we need. All what I can say is that I myself was so afraid of this course, since I am an international student, and English is not my first language, but now I am glad that I took this course with Dr. Williams. I struggled many times, but she was the main reason behind developing and improving my writing. So, if you have to take this course, just take Dr. Williams without any hesitation. As for the workload, it is heavy. This class requires a decent time, like 8-10 hours a week. There are discussion boards, drafts, in-class activities, peer reviews, reflections, and of course the major assignments. But all of them are helpful, and I guarantee you will see an improvement in your writing by the end of the semester. Just do your work, no more, no less. |

She's a cool professor, but I wasn't too crazy about how she grades stuff. It's kinda tough, and you really gotta put in the work to do well in her class. On the bright side, she's chill about deadlines and gives us a 24-hour grace period for all assignments (except the final), no questions asked. I submitted a few assignments late and I still got full credit. |

She does not teach, gives unfair grading, arrives 10 minutes late every lecture, is clueless half the time, makes instructions more confusing than it should be. |

Absolute horrible professor. She goes to class 10 minutes late and has the audacity to mark students tardy. She does not teach at all and gives unclear instructions for assignments. Her grading is basically random since she herself don’t understand the assignment. |

Great teacher who actually wants you to succeed in her class. The class is challenging and requires a lot of consistent work but if you ask for help she will not hesitate to guide you through something you don't fully understand. Professor wants you to learn rather than just get a passing grade and she will take the time to teach you. Flexible deadlines with the possibility of extension (for good reasons) were another great part of her course. |

Great professor, interesting classes and relaxing teaching environment. He really cares about your grade and wants everyone to get an A. Definitely recommended for ENGL101X. You just implement his advice on your draft and the grade for your final submition would be good-looking. One of the most friendly professors I met. |

A dispassionate hound of a grader. Do not take him. Take ENGL101 with the right professors you will have a better time. Took him in the fall of 2022. He said some nonsense about being 'Hangry' the whole semester because he deleted all his files and some unfortunate events happened in his life. This is no excuse to take it out on the students' grading. He will smile and laugh with you in class, do not be fooled, for the wicked shall deceive. |

An unnecessarily heavy workload for an ENGL101 class. There is so much useless busywork. Went to his office hours, implemented his feedback, and got points taken off for following his advice. He did give students a chance to bump up their grades nearing the end of the semester but graded very harshly for the first half. |

Benjamin Baker is an enthusiastic teacher. In order to get good grades, DO NOT TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS LATE. He will take off a sizable portion of your paper grade for lateness. If you use what he teaches you to write the paper, it's not hard to get an A- or A. I think that he's a good teacher who's fairly strict with grading (except discussion board, just post whatever sounds ok) but also chill in class. |

Really good professor. He was very comprehensive with all of his students and I want totally recommend to take ENGL101X with him. His grades are acurratelly rated and I would say that even a on my position paper I was given a better grade than I had expected. |

The course has high workloads, there will be a lot of discussion boards as homeworks. However, the professor himself is pretty nice. Even if you missed some homeworks, you can still submit it after and he will still grade it. |

If you take his class, don't expect you can get high grades. He is strict, and his rigidness is reasonable (he helped me know the word limit and citation format are essential for academic writing). He is a good, responsible professor. If you have any questions, you can ask him. He will be pleased to answer you on time. Also, attending his office hour will help you get better grades. He respects and cares about anyone in his class (if you are shin is still ok) |

You work on one final position paper for the whole semester.. He is a great guy but he is a harsh grader! You have many small assignments due every class. Attendance is mandatory but I personally think it's not that important bc you don't really do stuff during class |

I hate writing, but I like him as a professor. He is very helpful, explains specifically what he wants, and is always ready to assist with your topic. He encourages everyone to get a good grade, and does everything, so that it is possible for everyone. He is a bit tough in grading, but I would say it's quite fair enough |

Dr. Baker makes the class very engaging and clearly communicates his expectations throughout the class. However, it's super easy to score an A-/B than it is to score an A or A+. It will require a significant amount of effort to ensure a good grade, which is not guaranteed if you do not put in the effort. |

Really flexible teacher with regard to deadlines. You can submit up to 3-4 hours after a deadline and you'll be fine. Although, ENGL101X is a tough course Dr. Williams does her best to help you. I would advise you to go to her office hours to see what is expected in the assignments. Make sure to read her rubric carefully. The average grade in my class with consistent work is about a B+. |

DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ANY OF YOUR ENGLISH COURSES! I took him for eng101x and that's the only grade that is bringing my total GPA down! His teaching is alright but his grading is SO HARSH it's unbelievable. I have seen literally every other English teacher correct other students' grades leniently. His grading is just like the way he acts in class, like a complete joke! |

Prof. Baker is nice and his class is helpful. Generally, all the grades are around 90. It is super easy to get at least B+. However, getting an A requires some efforts. I always did well except one oral presentation, and he only gave me 70/100 for that assignment. It reduced my total grade a lot. I also know some friends got B/B+ because of same reason. A good grade is not guaranteed and you should work on it. |

a decent professor gave me high grades that i do not even deserve. decisions are graded by completion so submitting on time basically grants a full grade. only three major paper assignments and basic completion will grant you sufficient scores. work hard to get an a, or basic working to get about a-. Baker is very nice guy who provides understandable class content and that will be all you will need for assignments. personally did not aim for a so did intentionally got a lower grade. but regular work and communication are sufficient for an A in this class. |

Will is an awesome professor. He makes everything fair. There are not too much assignments. And he did teach me a lot. Also, because he asked us to "socialize", I also made a lot friends in his class. BTW, I'm not an English native speaker, but he is very patient although sometimes I may have horrible pronunciation. |
