This is a really tough class. If you are looking to take it, I'd recommend having more Quantum exposure than just PHYS270. I don't know which specific class is best, but something like PHYS360, PHYS401/2, or ENEE491 would've likely been helpful. Avik is a really smart guy, with lots of knowledge on this subject. His lectures consist of him writing on the board a lot, with the occasional presentation to accompany the lectures. He wrote lots of derivations for different equations to help understand where different things come from, but I often felt like each lecture we were moving on so fast that I couldn't retain the last lecture’s information. If you ask questions, he is more than willing to answer, but I usually didn't know when I was too stumped to ask for help. This class had ~4 HWs, 2 with MATLAB content and 2 without. You usually had ~10 days to complete these homeworks, and discussing with peers was encouraged, although of course your final submission had to be your own work. These homeworks were very difficult for me to complete, but with some grit and a little guidance from the internet, I was able to get them done. There was a midterm for which the average was ~70% if I remember correctly, and a take-home midterm we had just over 48 hours to complete. The final project was to review 1-3 papers on quantum technologies and explain them to your peers. Grades for this were fairly high, with the expectation that it would raise our grades a good portion. This is a very new class, with this semester being the 2nd time the class was offered. I'm sure a lot of this is subject to change, but it was similar to the syllabus for 2024 posted on testudo.
