Great class and great professor! This is a discussion-based course that meets once a week for three hours. Throughout the semester, we covered topics such as politics, public health, policy development, and government programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP. Dr. Kessel is very accomplished, and it’s clear that he’s an expert in his field. I have no complaints about the course content—I learned a lot and was exposed to a wide range of interesting topics. While the class does include some busywork, such as creating presentations and writing papers, the TAs are very lenient and essentially give full credit as long as you meet the assignment requirements. There is also a participation grade that depends on class attendance. The final exam is take-home, and Dr. Kessel essentially gives you the answers throughout the semester. The absolute best part of this class is the guest speakers. We had around six experts visit the class to talk about their work and career paths, and one of the guest speakers was President Pines, which was pretty cool. Overall, this class is definitely an easy A.

This class was the signal most impactful class I think i will ever take in college. Dr. Kessel gives you an unparalleled overview of the American Public Health system without a ton of work. Class was engaging and interesting, and Dr. Kessel really cares about his students and their success. Dr. Kessel made me want to go into public health. In terms of exams, there's one final that Dr. Kessel tells you all the answers to (the lowest score was 100%). In terms of homework, we had homework once every two weeks maybe and a lot of support from the TAs and its pretty straight forwards. No pop quizzes or crazy assignments. Very useful information and highly relevant to anyone pursuing a healthcare career!
