Studies in 19th Century French Literature and Culture; Femmes Fatales in Opera, Narrative, and Film

This course charts the rise of the "femme fatale" figure beginning with 18th-century French literature to the apogee of her expression in the 19th century. We also examine cinematic and operatic versions of the stories we'll be studying, analyzing shifts in cultural perspective as well as the changes made according to the demands of specific media. Taught in French.
