GEOG306 Expecting an A- Anonymous 07/29/2024 |
Took this as an online summer course where attendance was not mandatory. All lectures and labs were posted on ELMS. Prof. Zhou is very nice and accommodating and clearly cares for his students' success. He's also very thorough when explaining concepts, although he does talk a bit slow for me. The homework for this class was mildly confusing for me because certain terms/problem types were not talked about too much in detail during lecture. We did have practice problems but they were more straight forward than those given on the HW. The actual material isn't difficult (lots of statistics and formulas), just the application at times. |

Great professor! He's very knowledgable about the course content and teaches it well and provides examples on how to do them! The exams and the homework are very fair. The homeworks consist of R studio assignments and there's a tutorial you go through during the lab. There is extra credit when you attend lecture and lab so that helped with my overall grade. The lectures are also recorded. He also curves so that anything 90 and above is an A. |

Overall, he is a great professor! Tests are open book and open note (no googling though) which is nice, as you can focus on how to do the various statistical processes rather than memorizing a bunch of things. Also, they are relatively straightforward and closely follow the homeworks/what we learn in class. The homeworks are a bit time-consuming, but not too bad. You can definitely get by without attending the discussion sections (I barely went), as all the information you need from them is posted. Slides and lecture recordings are posted as well! The only downside is that the slides can be confusing sometimes and Dr. Zhou makes a fair few typos/errors when doing practice problems which can lead you astray if you don’t recognize he made a mistake. |

- The lectures are focused on solving problems and understanding concepts; no assignments graded in lecture itself, only attendance - The labs are focused on applying knowledge onto the software RStudio; no assignments graded in lab itself, only attendance - Professor has a strong accent, but you can probably get used to it (took me a little bit, so it depends) - This semester, we had a total of 7 homework assignments, each worth 6 total points - Practical exam focuses on knowledge, or lack thereof, of labs and use of RStudio, worth 15 total points - Exams are open-book, open-note, open computer (he forbids ChatGPT, open internet but not enforced) - Exam 1 is like an official midterm and Exam 2 is the final (exam 2 only covers 2nd half of semester), each worth 20 total points - The entire class is graded out of 97; - Be Aware: a few points off on assignments may hurt your grade, esp so if you do bad on a lot of the assignments - ATTEND LECTURES! Professor will go over practice problems for each section and you have to do the problem in a certain way, so make sure you go or get the notes / practice problem answers from a peer or friend --> the format for the practice problems, you have to follow on the homeworks and exams - If you attend almost all of the lectures and do the PointSolutions (these aren't graded), you get an EXTRA 2/0 at the end of the semester (for the spring 2024 semester, we had 21 total lectures, but you get the full 2/0 if you attend at least 19) - If you attend all of the labs and sign-in, you get an EXTRA 1/0 at the end of the semester (sometimes the TAs will cancel lab, but this won't affect the extra credit grade) - Professor and TAs are lenient on homework extensions, but you have about 1-2 week(s) to complete them regardless THIS SEMESTER: 7 homeworks x 6 points each = 42 total points 1 practical exam x 15 points = 15 total points 1 midterm (aka exam 1) x 20 points = 20 total points 1 final (aka exam 2) x 20 points = 20 total points = net total 97 points (+ up to 3/0 extra credit points) |

She is a fine TA in actual lab/class and tries her best to create a welcoming environment as well as be helpful. However, she is the harshest grader I have ever met, to the point of ridiculousness. She takes points off for things not specified in homework questions and nitpicks at absolutely everything. I got points off for an incomplete sentence. She also does not offer the correct answers when grading, only tells you that you were wrong. I would not suggest taking her. |

Tough to understand a lot of the time. Gave "attendance" quizzes. Pretty liberal on the exams, open books, open notes, even OPEN LAPTOP. Course was graded with a curve, 85% was an A. |
