GVPT319L

Topics in Social Advocacy; Legal Advocacy

The focus in this course is on trial advocacy, a concept which refers to the litigation process and adversarial proceedings that occur between the parties, and that ultimately are resolved by judges or jurors. Although the practice of law in the United States involves more than litigation (e.g., corporate or "transactional" legal work, which typically occurs out of court), the vast majority of law school courses, including virtually all traditional first-year courses, implicate legal principles related to litigation. Thus, just like law school itself, this course focuses on legal principles and concepts related to litigation. By the end of this course, students will have been exposed to the majority of legal concepts that one encounters in law school and in the practice of law and, it is hoped, will begin (as they say in law school) to "think like a lawyer."
