Topical Investigations; Government and Politics of Latin America

This course will examine key political and economic policies in Latin America over the past four decades. We will discuss major events and trends in the region, such as the democratic transitions of the 1980s, the market reforms of the 1990s, and the rise of a Leftist leadership in the 2000s. We will explore the interactions of political and economic actors under specific international conditions, with a particular emphasis on how the state structures, channels and negotiates the economy. The course includes a 10-day trip to Havana, Cuba in January 2021, where students will meet with government and community representatives. In ordert to register students must complete a Memorandum of Understading indicating their commitment to particpate in both the on campus and study abroad portions of the class. Completed forms should be submitted via email to Tristan Hightower, Assistant Director of Global Learing, at thighto@umd.edu. In the event that international travel is not permitted in January 2021 by the University, this course will be adapted to ensure students earn three (3) full credit hours on campus. MOU is available by clicking here.
