This class is not really about the inner workings of Congress but more of a deep dive of reconstruction and minority representation in Congress. Professor assigns a ton of readings that students present on each class. She does not use elms for uploading assignments, so I did not know any of my grades for the semester until 8 hours prior to the final exam when she gave me my cumulative grade without any individualized feedback. She does not upload slides so you have to be present to capture information. When I had an excused absence, she still did not share the slides. I think it’s a good course, but be prepared for no feedback and heavy readings.

This was her first time teaching the course, therefore she was still figuring out some things. At first, she assigned very long readings, but then she eased up when we gave her feedback. Your biggest assignment in this class will be a midterm research paper that is expected to be 20 pages long. Additionally, you will have 4 500-word response papers to write, but you choose at the beginning of the semester the dates in which you want to write them. You are expected to be a discussion leader once in the semester. Overall, she is a great person with lots of experience working on the Hill, so it is interesting to hear from her perspective. However, she does take some time to get back to you if you email her. I recommend participating in class and attending her office hours (she has a website where you can sign up).
