HACS208P Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/21/2025 |
Devin is a nice person, but this is the most boring class I have ever taken at UMD. He also very obviously picks favorites and grades those favorite students less harshly. The lectures and curriculum are disorganized and each of his slides will have a vague question on it with a bunch of pictures of question marks everywhere and then he will go off on a tangent about the topic without getting to the main point. He also grades very unfairly for the writing assignments. He wants a very specific "policy writing" style and never explains it, but instead, makes us do the assignment, writes comments, and has us decide what policy writing is. But after that, it became very obvious that he was never actually grading any of the essays he was assigning us, but just uploading it to ChatGPT and asking it to rate it out of 10 for the grade and copy pasting the comments onto canvas, so people only got 8 or 9 out of 10 on it. Additionally there was barely any good study material for the midterm. |

He is very kind and clearly wants students to succeed, but the lectures are incredibly dry. It often felt like reading a textbook out loud—except slower. When you get to class, be prepared to fight off sleep. The biggest issue is the grading on writing assignments. He is super picky about being concise but makes the word count so longgggg. |

class was boring imo (not a policy person) but the class is overall easy, the only assignments to be worried about are the midterm and the take home final memo. he curved a little bit and I ended with an A- |

Dr. Harry is a really cool guy and is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. Enough said. Though the content is interesting, the class can be a bit boring as times because he lectures for an hour and 15 almost every single time. There's only a handful of assignments: weekly discussion posts (very easy), a group project (pretty easy, all groups got the same grade of 237.5/250 which is weird), a midterm (which was kinda hard, there's a couple quizlets out there to help you as well as the lecture slides, but the class average was around an 85), a group simulation (very easy), and a memo (quite difficult and graded harshly). Overall, not a bad class. Take it for some gen eds and aces LLP requirements. |

The course itself seemed more interesting than it ended up being. Charles Harry lectured for just about every class. The final was a paper while the midterm was an exam, so it's important to pay attention to the first half of the course (or at least study). The class was boring, but manageable and not hard. |
