HESP300 Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/15/2023 |
She's awesome!!! Class is challenging but she's a great lecturer and goes out of her way to be available to students. Definitely take Hesp300 with her if you have the chance. |

Professor Huang is easily one of my favorite professors I've taken a class with so far. She's incredibly detailed in her explanations in lecture, and she works hard to create an inclusive environment where students feel that they can ask her any questions (even stupid ones)! The coursework itself can be a little bit confusing, so definitely go to her office hours to talk out anything that confuses you. There are 2 unit exams and a cumulative final, and though they're open note, the questions ask you to apply concepts to scenarios, so I ended up not using my notes that much. She's really kind and a really wonderful person. The content is really interesting though, and I highly recommend! |
Nan Ratner
HESP300 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 12/23/2022 |
I enjoyed the course, as taught by Dr. Ratner, who is a very knowledgeable professor. There were quizzes based on the textbook that were completed and retaken at home. There were also QMARIs to write throughout the year. Dr. Ratner walks you well though a sample one. It was my first time writing them, so I asked for help and guidance from the TA when writing the remaining ones. The professor provided the slides in advance to the classes, so one could use them to follow along during class. The classes were recorded, so one could go back and review missing context. There was a midterm and a final. Both exams were testing on big concepts and takeaways covered in class. They involved a lot of writing short responses to questions, so strong comprehension of studies and information is needed. We got to bring a notecard to the exams, which help to write down the more difficult terms. In general, I learned a lot in the class and found it to be a very manageable class. |

She is so incredibly sweet and helpful; she really wants the success for her students and will work with them as much as needed, because this class can be a little challenging. |
Dominique Mwepu

Dr. Mwepu has an energy about himself that is unmatched in other professors, and you will experience it right out of the gate. He will expect you to be interactive and participate, so be ready for that. Ask questions if you do not understand something! I can not stress this enough. At times his exams had material we did not cover in class, so be sure to actually do the readings he lists on the syllabus. Overall he is a good professor with lenient grading, but this will not be an easy "A", so put in the work. |

Wow ... some of these reviewers are bitter. The class is OK, Dr. Newman presents a lot of the same stuff you cover in LING200 and LING240 in this class, but it a much more palatable format. There are three tests, she drops one (pretty generous, people!). If you read the book/articles, you shall do well, if you did not, you will not. Tests are a mix of multiple choice, short answer, true/false and she actually amends how many of each depending on what people complain about the most after each test (also very generous!). Powerpoint/lecture style - she talks the whole time, and actually records herself and posts the recordings - no other professor I've had has ever done that. She also posts a ton of resources online for more info and practice. She gives students every opportunity to do well. She doesn't baby people when they ask questions, if the answer is no, she says no instead of walking on eggshells, maybe that's what the crybabies below didn't like. I didn't go to get office hours but briefly talked to her after class on a few occasions, she's a perfectly nice lady. She does talk pretty fast, but there's the recordings - didn't get something? Listen to it over again, no big deal. Not totally true about updating BB either, she updated ours for at least the first 1/3 of the class. |

WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Terrible person in general. She is mean. She does not explain what she wants, and no matter what you do it's never good enough. Absolutely no structure to her course, and she makes no sense. Please save yourself and take a course from a different professor. Don't put yourself through the torture of Dr. Newman. |

Dr. Newman is a miserable person that rather not teach but has to in order to get research money. I hear she's good to work under for research but when it comes to teaching she is awful. She basically has no tolerance for the human race. If you ask a question she will belittle you, as well as not answer your question. The five critiques you turn in she will always say they are not grammatical and take points off even though I went to the writing lab and had English graduates proof read my paper, I guess a HESP teacher is more qualified to analyze English? If you can take this class with Ratner, wait and do yourself a favor. |

I think she is a awful teacher. Professor Newman talks way to fast, has WAY to high expectations, looks at you with an evil look when you ask a question and is just straight up rude. She also doesn't help you if you go to her office hours. |

Hesp300- Powerpoint style lecture that are posted online. You need to go to class because the powerpoints don't really say much. She talks WAY too fast, I brought my laptop and most of the time I couldn't get all of it down. The tests are pretty challenging they comprise of multiple choice, essay, and true and false questions. There is one opportunity for extra credit. There are 5 articles you have to read and answer questions about. They are graded very strictly. The teacher was not my favorite. She doesn't update grades on blackboard and you can't keep the tests. |
