HIST325 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/22/2023 |
Dr. Simmons is an extremely passionate professor who truly wants his students to succeed and is highly approachable if you have any questions or concerns. I am not a history major, did not take any of the lower level courses or have virtually any background, and found he was very clear about expectations for assignments and allotted plenty of time for any questions or concerns. I will say that if you are the type to skip lecture often you will find it difficult to get an A in his courses which I suspect is the bottom line for the negative reviews. Also, the review saying he doesn't release feedback or grades is just plain wrong. |

While Simmons knows nearly everything on this topic, he doesn't dumb down the concepts for students who should be taking this class. When writing assignments it's almost as if he says "I could get an A on this, so they should be able to too," which makes each assignment extremely difficult. He also doesn't release lecture notes so a lot of the information is based on what he said. If you miss what he says, you can never get that information back. |

I think Simmons can come off a bit pretentious and tends to assume his students are already familiar with the course content. Coming in without much background on the subject matter (needing to take a course out of my specialization) I felt a disconnect between Simmons and many other students. He often refers to previous courses he has taught as many of the others students have taken him before. It is hard to ask questions in lecture when you are confused/lacking background information. There are a lot of readings in class and no real textbook to follow along with throughout the semester. Lectures are not recorded and the slides consist of images of historical sites and artifacts. Lastly, Simmons does not release grades (I am assuming for the entire semester). So I have no way to view feedback on writing assignments or quizzes. He seems like a nice guy with a lot of knowledge on the subject matter. Students interested in this subject seem to really like him but I would be weary if you're not as well versed. |
