Introduction to Gerontology for Health Services Professionals

An in-depth view of aging and the aging process is provided. The course material covers aging processes (psychological and sociological aspects of aging as they interact with biological processes) in the context of health care and long-term services and supports in the United States. A comprehensive textbook is combined with supplemental articles, visits to relevant websites, videos, and podcasts. These materials are augmented with focused weekly class discussions about the readings, 'portraits of aging' in the media, and guest speakers describing their careers in aging. The text and articles provide theories, research methods, and current topics in the field of aging. The course instructor will supplement the readings with discussion of applied aging policy research throughout her career and she will invite guest speakers to discuss their careers in Gerontology.
