Super nice professor who really cares. Lets students have cheat sheets for the exams (which is great considering the class is straight memorization), and decided to drop an exam at the end of the semester.

Great professor, and even dropped an exam for us when it was not originally in the syllabus. Even though I was not a fan of the content of the class (basically all straight memorization), Dr. Karen made the information as bearable as it could be. If you have to take 207, take her.

Definitely a great professor in terms of teaching and compassion. However, I feel that the course itself was just too dense and that preparation for exams could have been easier with a simple study guide or more direct review sessions. I still would def recommend to anyone on the fence on taker her.

She is SUPER KIND. She is super understanding. She really couldn't help that the class itself is just jam-packed with information we have to learn, but she does give support in learning all of it. Some class periods consisted of more than 60 slides. But, for my class, she had recordings of the lectures which really helped to absorb all of the information. She basically did everything in her power to help you on the test. Very good teacher, but I think me section was the last section fo HLSC207 that was ever going to be given, so if you have to take BSCI207, take her.

Dr. Karen is one of the kindest professors, and she knows her stuff. HLSC207/BSCI207 is just an information dump, and thus the exams are the same. There's not much to complain about... the lectures were very fast paced, but all slides were posted after the lectures, and most of the times, recordings were too. Dr. Karen also provided many resources to help understand the knowledge and do well on the exams, including concept check quizzes (zero points) and the homework assignments. I believe my semester was the last semester of the HLSC section, but if you are going to take BSCI207, I highly recommend Dr. Karen!

Dr Karen is honestly the only reason 207 was tolerable. The class itself is not conceptually difficult but there is a LOT of information you have to learn. Dr Karen allowed us to have a cheat sheet for every exam which was super kind of her. Her exams were always fair, and she truly wanted her students to learn. She ended up dropping out lowest midterm score which was also a really nice surprise. If you have to take 207 take it with Dr. Karen!

His content is interesting and he knows the content really well, but he did not really teach. It might just be because of the whole COVID situation, but he just made us read his slides and did not have any live or video lectures.

*class was fully online due to covid* He doesn't teach. That's it. I didn't hear his voice after the first day of class. His idea of a lesson is releasing an annotated powerpoint and having his students read through it to basically learn the material themselves. I paid $2000 to download powerpoints off the internet, for an honors class. That's just insulting. Also, he decided to assign group papers called “explorations”. Group projects are already bad before it's impossible to actually meet with your group in person, and group papers are the worst type of group project. The papers were supposed to make us engage with the new material, but he did that by forcing us to research some obscure topic ourselves, then turning around and teaching it to us the following week. Or rather, releasing his research the following week and making us teach ourselves, because again, he doesn't teach. The final was optional though, so that's kind of cool. For anyone reading this who's considering joining ILS- the honors college is great. This professor isn't. It was his first year teaching the class, and I hope it will be his last. Please don't let this professor hold you back from choosing ILS. Despite my bad experience, I think it's worth struggling through this class for all of the other benefits the honors college can give you.

Yes this is his first year teaching the class, and yes it is an online learning environment, but it doesnt excuse his lack of teaching. He only holds office hours once a week and gives us poorly done powerpoints as our only material. His TA's hold office hours for longer than he does but they've never had him as a teacher so they aren't as much help as they should be (even though they can be useful). He will tell us not to worry about specifics and not to memorize certain information then test us on exactly that. The exams consist of 10 vague short answer questions in a 50 minute window that forces students to write until their fingers fall off because the questions are so vague they don't actually know what he expects in the answers. He is a nice guy but should not be teaching this class if the experience continues this way.
