Odd class. The rankings aren't too bad, just time consuming, and the same goes for the group homeworks. Lectures can be long and some topics, especially in the mathematics section, are very confusing if you don't have a strong stem background. Overall, not a bad class, but he can tell if you care or put in effort.

The course itself is a decent bit of work (three group homeworks, a final group presentation, individual rankings with a fair bit of writing, and reading scientific papers) but the grading is light, came in with no biology background and had a final grade over 100%. Just put in a little effort and make sure you have a solid group, also he said he's grading participation next semester so be aware of that. Fagan can be snarky about questions sometimes, and assignment expectations might be a little unclear at the start but he will clarify if you ask him. I also think that he thought that we as a class had significantly more background knowledge than we actually did, but he did adapt to that and is fairly nice if you speak to him.

Dr. Fagan is very passionate about the material he teaches and has strong expertise in species and the biology behind them. The course structure is fairly simple, with three group homework assignments, five AI species-ranking tasks, a field trip essay, and a final group presentation on an endangered species. There are no quizzes or exams; however, the assignment rubrics tend to be vague, which can make it difficult to know exactly what he is looking for. This is then frustrating when points are deducted for details that were not clearly communicated. His grading did become less strict over the semester, likely as he recognized that this is an honors course and students may not have the same biology background he does. Overall, if you put consistent effort into the assignments and projects, you can expect to do well.
