Tiara Thomas is a knowledgeable and passionate instructor. Her class HNUH258Q is particularly interesting because the course content is relevant to her and her co-instructors tribe the Piscataway. Information regarding the Piscataway is not easily accessible anywhere else, which makes this class a unique opportunity as a student. Prior to taking this class I had no knowledge of the Indigenous people of the land I live on, so I think what I learned from Thomas was really important. That said, I quite dislike how Thomas structured assignments throughout the semester. The Canvas page is the worst and most disorganized I have used this semester. You will likely acclimate to its "charm" in a couple of weeks as I did, but that adjustment period will be needlessly unpleasant. Several of my classmates have missed assignments because they could not find them or did not know they were do. There are few major writing assignments in the class until the midterm. Prior to the midterm there were three informal paragraph response reflections/discussions, only one of which had a rubric and by the time of taking the midterm only one of which had been graded. This left me inadequately prepared for the midterm which required about five essay responses. I say "about" because no expectations were given by Thomas on the length of writing she was expecting in order to answer the midterm's questions. If you prefer clear expectations and feedback, the midterm will be a source of great stress for you. Additionally, most reading assignments were purposeless. Sometimes you would be assigned a reflection, but in many cases there would be no assignment or class discussion. In summary, Thomas is a great instructor who teaches a meaningful class. While she gives reasonable assignments, expectations for them are poorly articulated which can be frustrating.
