The best professor I've had at UMD thus far. Take this class as your cluster class if you need it!! Dr. Chiles seriously cares about his students and makes class exciting to come to each week. It's a little bit of work as you have to read a book almost every week, but it's genuinely engaging material and conversation, and I can't speech highly about Dr. Chiles enough.

Genuinely a great class. He treats it like a gen-ed class should be treated; aimed to generate curiosity and interest in the subject in an introductory fashion. There was no over-the-top harsh work at all, we just had to read a book for class discussions I'd say about every other week (since we had a lot of weeks off). The grade is mostly determined off of participation in class discussions so as long as you show up and participate you'll get a good grade. TLDR: This class did a great job of getting you interested in history, and finding patterns across various times in American immigration, without making you have to memorize stuff, or stress out about tests or exams. As for the professor itself, he is genuinely one of the kindest, funniest, and most engaging professors I've ever had and this is coming from someone who genuinely doesn't like history. He had to reschedule a class one week and he was so apologetic and genuinely so sweet about it afterwards. Great professor, great guy, definitely recommend this class.
