She's an absolute gem. She can seem a little intimidating but she's incredibly nice and wants her students to do well. This is by no means and easy B or A course, but it you work for it she'll reward you for your hard work. The biggest grades are the ACT classes, for those of you continuing Japanese at UMD you're probably already aware of these, but do not skip class. I missed maybe three classes, max, and it caused me to drop from the A- to A that I would've ended up with to the B+ I received. Homework's are really straight forward and used for practice for the chapter test, which follow the exact same structure. Overall if you like Japanese, and are willing to put in a lot of effort(these darn Japanese courses are 6 credits), then you'll find that not only your Japanese improves a ton, but your grade will reflect your effort as well.

I had Yamakita-sensei for both JAPN202 and JAPN302. She is a great teacher, and you can understand a lot by taking her class, but she is a pretty harsh grader. On quizzes and exams, even for just simple mistakes, she'll end up taking more points off than each question should even be worth. By taking he class, you'll be sure to be constantly frustrated by your grade. The class grade in 302 was so bad, she actually had to curve. In other words, if you want to get an A, you better be prepared to study your butt off so you don't make any mistakes on your exams or quizzes.

Inoue Sensei is amazing!! It's true her grading is extremely strict, but if you put in the work you'll do fine. You can tell she cares about teaching and her students. She even offered extra credit assignments in both JAPN201 and 202.
