I will preface this by saying that if you don't like to talk or participate in classes, this is 100% not the class for you. I came into this class feeling extremely intimated, as Prof. Feldstein introduced the class as extremely demanding because of all the readings involved. However, as the semester moved forward, his class made its way to becoming one of my favorite classes this semester. The class was engaging and I was always interested in the topics. Always be prepared to say one or two things each class to rack up participation points and know that as long you do the readings, you'll be fine. I had a lot of classes to juggle, yet I still somehow squeezed in time to do the readings. Of course, I highly recommend making friends and peers in this class, just in case you need to compare and make notes. I always attended class. However, I do know that if you miss one class, you will have to condense and recap the readings into a 300-page paper, which isn't hard but don't let your absences rack up to prevent this. TA Ivy is always there if you need to speak with them about your grade and is very lenient and understanding. There is always room for extra credit in that class, which I HIGHLY recommend taking, even if you are already in good standing in the class because it will boost your grade up highly. Again, if you had previous experience in journalism or history, this is the class for you.

This class seems fun, but the stupid participation grade evaluation was such bullshit. I attended every class in the semester, participated actively in discussions, and still recieved a lower end participation grade. It made absolutely no sense as 90% of the class was silent whenever we discussed anything. It was the sole factor that lead to me receiving such a paltry grade in this class even though I was on top of shit throughout the semester. 0 transparency when it comes to grading, no metric whatsoever beyond "participate during class discussions" and even still getting a lower end score really soured my experience towards this class. It is fun I guess but make the TA like you idk. This experience took the class from a 4 star to a 1 star in my book, I really did everything I could and still felt like I was evaluated unfairly, despite making attendance and discussion. Thumbs down, take some easy garbage to satisfy gen-eds not this opaque crap.

THIS CLASS IS SO FUN!!!! But if you don't like to talk, I would not take this. Participation is a huge chunk of ur grade. Also there's like a quiz every class on readings which can be annoying. Anyways Feldstein is so cute, humble and sweet. He really loves teaching and he really cares about his students. He is super super talented in the journalism industry and as a journalism student I rlly look up to him. This class is so entertaining and funny. He also bought cookies on the last day! Anyways he's such a slay, def take this class!!

This is a super fun class I would recommend to anyone who loves scandals in general - it is a huge time commitment though and requires you to put all your effort in. Participation is a HUGE part of your grade so if you don't feel comfortable sharing your ideas out loud probably isn't a smart class choice for you. Lectures were always interesting and a lil silly (depending on your classmates). I think its worth all the effort you have to put in - literally the most fun and interesting class I've taken yet.

Feldstein is a good prof and the class is pretty fun and chill. However, this class is a big time commitment so keep that in mind.

Professor Feldstein is so knowledgable and runs a pretty fun class. There are quizzes at the beginning of each class based on the readings for that class (usually 2/3 pretty short readings) that are easy points to get so make sure you do the readings before class. He values participation a lot so make sure to say things during the classes. You have to give one presentation, do a midterm exam and final paper on top of the quizzes which isn't too much work.

Don't let the online reviews scare you. This professor is incredible when his class is taken in person. He's very knowledgeable and loves when students participate. He has tons and tons of interesting stories to add on to the already very interesting course material. There are daily quizzes, but they're incredibly easy and grade boosting as long as you do the readings. Participation is key, though, and I wouldn't recommend this class to shyer students. Your participation is around a third of your grade.

Lots of readings, lots of quizzes, but they help cushion your grade for the papers. Professor Feldstein has lots of knowledge to share from being in the business, but also makes lectures engaging and interesting! Participation is a big chunk of your grade, but the discussions are chill and open-ended. I loved this class, Feldstein, and TA Ivy!

Feldstein was very unprepared and unprofessional with teaching this course in an online format. He had no accommodations for students who required extra time on quizzes and was constantly changing the syllabus because he couldn’t decisively make up his mind on what topic to cover for the day. Every student is scheduled for a student presentation during class and some will be unlucky to have to prepare their presentation all of a sudden with little notice because Feldstein changed the order in the schedule. If you miss class, you were required to write an additional 300 word essay on the assigned readings for the day while the people in class just took 5-10 question easy pop quizzes. It was as if to punish you for being absent even if you couldn’t help it because you were sick or observing a religious holiday. When students were called to give their comments or speak in class, Feldstein’s response back would just be an “Okay,” “Alright,” or “Thank you,” and move on to the next person. So pretty much, this course was reading numerous articles before class and then sitting for an hour to give your quick 2 cents on your thoughts with the cycle repeating over and over. He and his TA do the bare minimum for letting the class know each of their own specific and grading criteria. For example, the average grades for writing assignments and the midterm were so low because the TA immediately docked all points if a student mentioned a subject that was discussed in class but did not specifically word or state it how the the TA would have liked it to be. Grading on essays was usually agreeable because you were either a good writer or not. But overall , grading seemed quite subjective and Feldstein didn’t provide clear measurements for how our work would be evaluated. The course had interesting topics but unless you like journalism or like to write, the stress of this class was incredibly unnecessary for a general ed credit.

Find another gen ed! This class was a disaster. Although I took it online during the pandemic, it was extremely disorganized and probably would be disorganized in person as well. Prof. Feldstein changed the syllabus several times, usually giving notice but also too late that the class had already done the readings/assignments. Prof. Feldstein was rude to students, often shutting off their microphones on Zoom while they were in the middle of speaking because he did not want to hear it or had something else to say. The amount of reading for homework needed to be done for this class was outrageous and it was as if he assumed his class was the only class we were all taking. He gave "pop quizzes" on these readings about once a week, if not twice. There was an essay due the right before class began again after spring break (which was still break) and a pop quiz the next morning on the first day back of classes. The TA graded our essays and presentations, and although it was possible to do well, the majority of the class usually didn't. It was almost as if there was no way to do the assignments correctly. The final paper was worth 600 points which was ridiculous for a 200 level journalism gen ed. The majority of the class was extremely frustrated throughout the entire semester and it is unfortunate because the material we learned was actually interesting.

this class was really interesting and a nice break from all of the other stem classes i had to take. the prof is really chill (sometimes he's unorganized and changes up the syllabus but when he does do that he sends out an announcement to let everyone know) and has super cool stories to tell. the lectures are very engaging and the discussions were always rly good, considering this class was completely online. the ta was strict but if you emailed him asking for feedback, he took his time to give thorough and meaningful comments about where you went wrong in your paper, what you can do to improve next time, and why he graded your paper the way he did. his grading was fair (sometimes a little harsh), but it's expected for a class of this level. to do really well in this class, all you have to do is read the articles posted, participate in lecture, and be able to take constructive feedback. the discussions were my favorite part! would definitely take this class again. if you're a stem major, this is a great i-series credit that lets you learn about other really cool and relevant stuff going on!
