Seong Minne Koh KORA201 Anonymous 10/09/2021	I've taken KORA101 and KORA102 with 고 선생님 and currently taking 201. She's really kind and truly wants to help us understand and learn Korean. If you need help, definitely ask her and she can clarify things and is super nice to talk to! Class is mostly taught in Korean, with some English. The 100 level classes are taught in a more even mix of both to help you get used to hearing the language and pronunciation. When teaching new content, 선생님 will explain in English and go over examples. She also will explain some cultural context behind different expressions and stuff, and will also talk about some Korean pop culture. 101 begins with learning Hangul: writing, reading, and listening. Then we learn things like how to introduce ourselves, basic sentences and vocab, and basic grammar. It's slow paced and we spend quite a lot of time learning Hangul and the different units. There's a group presentation in English, homework, quizzes, midterm, and final. Some students will enter the course already knowing Hangul and some basic expressions, but most will not and there's definitely no expectation for you to be already familiar with Korean. 102 continues from where 101 left off, and we cover more complex grammar and more vocabulary. Grammar included things like future tense, past tense, and -습니다 form. It's slightly more fast paced than 101, and for that reason it is a little harder. Additionally, you want to be familiar with what was taught in 101 since things like vocab and conjugation rules will reappear and help you understand new content. The graded things are similar, but instead the presentation will be in Korean and will be a short skit instead about a topic of your choosing. 201 has been enjoyable so far. You definitely want to be familiar with the content in 101 and 102. It feels slower paced than 102, since 102 is the first class that goes directly into teaching new grammar and vocab. During this class you'd be familiar enough with the material in the previous classes so it's less daunting. Additionally, a lot of conjugation rules up to this point are quite similar, so it's easier to learn and understand new grammar! The graded things are similar, but this time the skit is about Korean folktales (a list is provided and you can choose). For 102 and 201, our group skits could be live or recorded. However, this could be due to COVID, but I'm not sure since 201 is in-person. Quizzes are just on that week's material and pretty straightforward. In my experience, the class dynamic is also really nice! I've met some really great people in my Korean classes. Since it's a language class (and there's no Korean major), you get to meet a lot of people from different majors. TLDR: I would highly recommend taking Korean with 고 선생님. She's kind and a great teacher, and easy to talk to. The classes are paced well, and the content builds off itself quite well. The way the different assignments are weighed is done well too- you want to do well on your exams, but if you don't you can still do okay in the class. There's a fair bit about Korean culture, and you can always ask about topics going on related to Korea (for example, popular K-dramas are mentioned a lot). Plus, you get to meet a lot of new people too!
