Senior Capstone Course in Latin American Studies; Social Justice and Public Art: Policing Gender, Race, and Citizenship

Capstone course for advanced students in the Latin American Studies Certificate Program or other students with appropriate preparation. Special topic: Social Justice and Public Art: Policing Gender, Race, and Citizenship. How does the state create and enforce the categories of "citizen" and "criminal," and how can visual, literary, and performance art challenge these distinctions? In this class, we will study the ways that different types of public art not only depict situations of and injustice but also actively resist them. Students will be required to write a capstone research paper related to the theme of the course.
