As a student at The University of Maryland I had Dr. Eugenia Lao as a Professor in three semester courses: Elementary Latin I01 and 102, and a course on the Roman poet Ovid in which we studied his works. I found all three courses to be well-organized and intellectually stimulating. Dr. Lau proved to be an outstanding Professor who genuinely cared about her students. The Elementary Latin courses were both informative and challenging. I learned a great deal in both of these courses. The syllabus was excellent. Dr. Lao’s instructional methods included recorded lectures that I found fascinating and well-organized. The lectures presented Latin grammar and syntax in a very interesting way, often sprinkled with humor and fine visuals. Additionally, Dr. Lao hosted a lively zoom session each week in which students worked on oral translations focusing on improving their understanding of Latin grammar and vocabulary. During these sessions I found Dr. Lao to be helpful, patient, and extremely professional. The Ovid course involved students translating original Latin text and understanding the nuances of this Roman poet. Dr. Lao demonstrated a significant knowledge and enthusiasm for the material we covered in class. In short, this class was both educational and fun. Finally with respect to assessments and homework I found Dr. Lao to be fair and always capable of providing positive feedback to me. I highly recommend any of Dr. Lao’s courses to serious students of Latin and the Classics. Jonathan Porter 4/28/26 |

When I took Latin 101 in Fall of 2024, Dr. Lao was extremely helpful, dedicated, and empathetic towards her students. I had never taken Latin prior to that point, and she was absolutely a fantastic professor to introduce me to Latin. She was very willing to adapt to what students needed to learn best, and made it a point to reach out for student feedback frequently. Fittingly, she runs a very democratic classroom, in my experience! I myself am an education major, and I find myself very inspired by my experience with Dr. Lao's class. As both a student and and educator, I could imagine few better teachers. Thank you so much! |

Highly recommend if you're taking this course. Patient and cares about your learning. Class was pretty challenging for me, but if you practice regularly you should be good. |

Really great professor, cares a lot about your learning. There's a weekly quiz, so do make sure you're practicing regularly. |

I took Latin 101 back in the fall and really liked the course. Prof. Lao was very helpful and in depth with the material and I feel as though I learned a lot. I earned an A. |

I withdrew from her course back in the fall of 2022. She called me lazy and stupid in an email when all I did was double check my answers in the back of the book. She suggested that I withdraw from the class because I am too dumb to "catch up from cheating". She threatened to give me an XF on my transcript if I did not drop the class even though all my advisors agreed I did not cheat. She is a terrible professor and I highly recommend never taking her. |

I dropped her class after she scheduled a zoom with me after our first assignment was due in a 101 level language class, basically called me mentally challenged, and suggested I take another language. It was a speaking assignment for a dead language that I've never spoken before and she assumed I was mentally challenged instead of learning a new language. do not take her class. |
