Seminar in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies; The Bad Feelings of Race, Gender, and Sexuality

"Pride" is often used as the feeling we are told people defined by difference should feel about their identity. This course turns away from constant demand for us to feel good about identity and asks, what happen when we look instead at moments when race, gender, and sexuality make us feel bad? The point of this course is not to make us feel bad, but rather to recognize how such moments invite us to find different approaches that go beyond models of inclusion. We will read work by scholars such as Sianne Ngai, Juana Maria Rodriguez, Darieck Scott, Amber Musser, Michel Foucault, Valerie Solanas, Karen Shimakawa, and others.
