I think Valentine is a decent professor. She is pretty good at giving lectures, and I was usually pretty engaged. The flow of the course content was well-designed and I feel like it was a good introduction to formal semantics. As a CS major, I could see it potentially being difficult for someone without a background in math/logic/CS, because there is a lot of that logical thinking that goes into modeling semantics formally, using lambda calculus and the ideas of set theory and functions, but I also think she explained it pretty well. She's pretty funny and charismatic and I liked going to lectures. Her communication could have been better at times and I didn't particularly love this class, but I don't have many bad things to say about it. I found it pretty easy. Readings are optional. You really just have the occasional homework assignment with some problems to work through, and two midterms but no final. Optional final project where you can investigate something interesting to you, but she gives an alternative where you can just do a harder homework as your final project. TL;DR: Valentine is fine as a professor, and the class was pretty easy. If you're interested in the subject of formal semantics I think LING410 with her would be fun for you.

Fantastic professor. Her lectures were always well-prepared, clear, and engaging with moments for interaction and checking understanding, without feeling too focused on student participation (which is good, because the class was extremely quiet). All of the linguistics faculty are excellent at teaching, but her style mixed participation with lecture extremely well. I'd take another class of hers in a heartbeat, hopefully with more involved classmates.

Learned a good amount about semantics. The workload was pretty light, and the material was presented well, with helpful walkthroughs as we built up knowledge. Dr. Hacquard and the TA felt easily accessible and very willing to help with any problems students had. This was an intro class but I wish we could have dug a bit deeper and gone a bit further with the material. The last unit was the best part of the class, since we got to look at semantic problems in the real world. Overall, her lecturing was easy to understand and sparked some very interesting discussions. I'd recommend Dr. Hacquard!
