LING879A

Seminar in Semantics; Quantity in Grammar and Cognition

Students will explore the relation between the grammar of quantity and the extralinguistic systems that humans use for representing quantity. We will ask specific questions including at least the following. How does meaning constrain verification? Does the existence of some 2nd order quantifiers license a claim that all quantifiers should be treated in 2nd order terms? How is the count/mass distinction represented in grammar and how can psychophysical data distinguish alternative hypotheses, if at all?
