Social Networks: A Mathematical Exploration
An increasingly large amount of information is being collected about us through our footprints on social media, our use of smartwatches and fitness trackers, and our online shopping routines. It is important that we educate ourselves on how data is being gathered, what it is being used for, and why such data can be both a blessing and a curse. In this course we will investigate these questions through the mathematical exploration of social networks. This will be accomplished by using publicly available social networks data, and by generating our own data. For example, the course project will be based on collecting, organizing, and analyzing data gathered by the class from the students in the Carillon Communities. These data could include activity trackers data, survey about music, movies, reading preferences from students the cohort.
