I'm not sure why all the previous reviews were so negative; I've had a great experience with Dr. Wang so far this semester. In comparison to the previous reviews, he was very patient, was very helpful in correcting our drumming, and made the class a fun environment. He also sprinkled in some history lessons on Korean percussion. If you're looking to take a fun instrumental class or need to take one for your music major/minor, take this class!

If you're willing to be subjected to the most vague, terribly organized, and half-assed class, syllabus, and grading scheme, then feel free to take this class. Otherwise, take African drumming.

Take African Drumming ensemble instead. If you went to our performance, you could have easily seen which group (ours vs. African drumming) had more fun. Although I received an A, I don't think I did anything differently from my peers who got B's. He grades subjectively so either get on his good side or get an undeserved B in a one-credit class.

Totally agreed with previous review. The only thing I might've screwed up on was that I missed one class, with his permission, and he gave me a B. I emailed him asking HOW/WHY I received this grade (as opposed to asking him to give me a freaking A for the course) and his only response for my question 1st email - "And based upon what you showed and did in class over the semester, as well as the final performance, I graded you on what I thought was the appropriate grade based upon all these factors" 2nd email "Every class I tested participation, knowledge of the piece, knowledge of the instruments/sounds. The final performance is based on knowledge of the piece as well as the ability to perform it. " Are you joking? I just asked you for a personal evaluation and these are the same two answers you give me? By the way, his syllabus is so freaking vague and half-assedly prepared that it's totally unfair how strict he gets with the grading criteria. He did not have any times prepared ahead of time for the practice rehearsals towards the end of the semester for the final performance, and I'm pretty sure he gave some of my other peers from that class B's too because they couldn't make it to those practice times. Is it really our fault that you give us the exact times at the very last minute? I also had an A for my mid-semester grade, did not change anything about my contribution to the class (except maybe that one missed class).. and what do you know? All of a sudden I have a B as my final grade. Most importantly, I was expecting to learn more about the history of Korean culture.. all he makes you do is memorize the instruments/notes and play. Barely even goes into the history or beauty of these instruments. As a Korean, I am quite disappointed. The no paper work/tests/quizzes ordeal might be a good incentive to take the class, but beware because he grades you on his instinct.

I am going to be drop dead honest with this professor. Good or bad, take it or leave it. Here is my review. 1. He strongly believes that his class is a 3 credit course. Come on now.. this is a 1 credit course. If you ever miss one class, then you will receive the worst glare for the rest of the semester. You are also likely to receive a B or worse no matter how much you participate. 2. He speaks to the students as if they are his kids. He has no respect whatsoever for the students. If he asks a certain question about reiterating verbally the rhythm, and you get it 99.9% right, or even 100% right, his answer will be, "ehhh..... yeah.... kind of.... yeah... you almost got it.... but not quite..." and then he would add on that either you said it "too slow.. or bad pronunciation.. or said it too fast." He basically just wants you to feel bad and try harder to answer his question more correctly next time, when even next time he will still say that you are not quite correct. Overall, his percussion skills may be great, but his teaching is like that of a teenager boy who is going through puberty smiling his butt off at the girls while teaching. Literally. PS. He ends class at the last minute, and then you need to put away the drums with him. So don't expect to finish on time.
