Professor Brown is very intelligent. The theory of beauty he puts forth in the class is highly complex and he works through each of the objections to it very clearly. You will do well in this class if you enjoy philosophy AND have a background in or serious appreciation of the arts (music, literature etc). While this class isn't strictly about art, it is necessary to apply the theory of beauty to art to illustrate principles. If you haven't discovered an appreciation for the arts at all, then you will have to try to develop one during the class.

Wow this class is by far the worst class I've ever talken at UMD and I'm a phil minor. I hate every second I spend in this class. This professor is so bad that I'm shocked this is the first review he has. Do not take this class. Hopefully the department will catch on and they will give us a better professor for this class which has potential to actually be good.
