Special Topics in Public Policy; Fundraising for Advocacy and Social Justice

An in-depth understanding of fundraising for non-profit organizations with a focus advocating for policy change will be provided. The course will explore current and historical policy shifts that have been driven by non-profit efforts. Students will learn how non-profit organizations can legally and effectively lobby, the difference between 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) designations, and how these organizations raise money to support their advocacy activities. Students will learn the coretenets of a strong non-profit fundraising operation that includes awareness and inclusion of racial funding equity. They will be introduced to skills including digital fundraising, grant writing, and program evaluation, and will learn how to incorporate a community-centric approach to fundraising efforts. Students will have the opportunity to choose a policy area to explore and develop fundraising activities and materials that support that issue area.
