Real Estate Development: Past and Future

Planning and Developing the places where we live, work, play and worship is both a business and a community exercise through a collaborative process typically called planning with the outcome we see in the cities, towns and communities all around us. Planned Cities and the complex collaborative public private process that undergirds real estate development will be at the heart of this elective. Students will research, visit and report on planned cities in the region, such as Historic St. Mary's City -- the first planned city in American--and others such as Greenbelt, Columbia and Kentlands. With those past efforts and outcomes in view, students will and engage in the collaborative process of planning a city of the future, engaging with professionals in the fields of finance, law, valuation, design, planning as well as public officials engaged in the process of entitling the real estate development process presently and into the future.
