Advanced Topics in Religious Thought; Islamic Reformism

Cross-listed with HIST428G. Credit only granted for HIST428G or RELS439A. This course is shared via synchronous videoconferencing with Penn State University as part of the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum. The course introduces students to the various trends of Islamic Reformism in the modern period. Topics will include: the scholarly and Sufi reform trends of the 18th century, the impact of the 19th century encounter with Europe on Islamic thought and practice, and the complex entanglements of political ideology and religious morality in the rise of Islamism during the 20th and 21st century.
