This course will investigate how queer and feminist subjects in Latin America and the Latina/o U.S. engage questions of gender and sexuality, and also politics and culture. Using thought as our framework, we will use an expansive lens to understand how thinking is also a way of doing across a range of activities, from theoretical texts to activist movements to artistic practices and more. We will read foundational work from thinkers such as Gloria Anzaldu a, Rigoberta Menchu, Jose Esteban Munoz, Juana Maria Rodriguez, and others. We will also read novels and poetry from writers including Raquel Gutierrez, Justin Torres, and Myriam Gurba. This course will also focus on performance and contemporary art practices to help us illuminate the many complexities of thinking gender and sexuality across the Americas. All texts will be read in English, no previous knowledge of Spanish required.
