Damien Hagen WGSS250 Anonymous 12/20/2024	Skim the readings, and you should be good, it's more about the idea, and you can finesse participation. Participating a lot helps. Have fun with the essays and zine assignment, and do your discussion, and you should get a good grade. Hagen is a good professor and knows her stuff, so if you're interested in arts and feminism, take the class, if not, still take the class if you have to do the work!
Jocelyn Coates WGSS250 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/13/2024	Too much for a gen ed class. Attendance is pretty much mandatory. Participation is a big part of the class and the content is very heavy and sometimes hard to understand. She is definitely passionate about her work. I expected an art analysis class but instead we spent most classes discussing long readings that were assigned the nights before.
Renee Scott WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/12/2024	So the class itself in my opinion is SO WORTH fulfilling a gen ed for being online. Yes is synchronous but it's only 2x a week and the class content is so simple and easy. This is my last gen ed and has by far been the easiest to complete. Some weekly readings but I literally spent a good 2-2.5 hrs a week on this class including lecture time. Now for the professor... she def has some issues. She can be kinda rude in a class that's supposed to be about opinion which I find hilarious because she will tell you your interpretation of something is straight up wrong which seems like the opposite meaning of art lol? She has a mad victim complex and it's like she doesn't understand that as a professor she has responsibilities to communicate and post assignment requirements and grades. She never updated any assignments for this semester or sent out written instructions for projects. Worth it? yes cause honestly easy A. Will she give you a headache? yes. As long as you act like you care and talk during class she will like you and TRUST having her like you is a big deal in this class. its not right... but that's what happens when a professor doesn't know how to regulate emotions.

The course was extremely manageable and time always passed by quickly if you paid attention and engaged in discussions. The course was largely discussion based, so there are more than enough opportunities to participate since she gives us several questions to think about first among small groups. The readings themselves only felt like too much on a few occasions, but they were certainly manageable. At least give an effort to do the readings and pay attention to what others are saying in discussion and you will be fine. The material in this course felt extremely relevant to the world today and I left the course a lot more knowledgeable than when I first stepped in. You get out of this course only what you are willing to put in, but I strongly believe it is both crucial and necessary for everyone to understand the topics covered in this course. Take this course, and listen and learn. You won't regret it.

She is very knowledgeable about various topics and also very understanding- reach out to her if you need help. Participation is 30 percent. I had class at 9:30 and sometimes struggled with attendance but if you put in an honest effort and contribute in class- you will do fine. Sit with a good group because there are daily discussion questions and the professor will listen in on your discussion in your small groups.

Sit with a good group of people because you will have discussion questions every class. Coates is an excellent professor who is very knowledgeable about various topics. However, I am someone who has little motivation to go to class early (9:30 section) but she is very understanding. Contribute in class, make an effort, and you will do great.
Renee Scott WGSS250 Expecting a B Anonymous 12/09/2024	This class is terrible, as is the teacher. You'd honestly be better off taking an in-person class for your elective. It took her until almost the second-to-last week of the semester to post your grade. We had about six assignments throughout the whole semester, which you might think sounds good, but they were actually really bad assignments. She always plays the victim and never accepts accountability, even when the whole class has an issue with her behavior. About 5 out of 10 times, she wouldn't respond to emails, so you never get any feedback if you email her. Terrible communication overall—she's the worst professor I've ever had in my 44 years.

Heres the run down: - Attendance is mandatory (daily quizzes - 2 drops, so you can miss class twice). - Participation is not based on how much you participate, but the quality of your commentary (very few people get an A in participation from what I've heard) - This is advertised to be an art analysis class (or at least somewhat focused on art), yet we mostly just read long readings before each class then discuss the readings (there have been 5 classes where we look at art, we have an art analysis paper however). - Class structure: first 15 mins is a reading quiz, next 30 mins discussion in small group regarding the reading, last 40 mins discussion with full class regarding the reading. Class never ends early. As a CS major or someone who has interest in art, I don't recommend.
Jocelyn Coates WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/20/2024	excellent professor who cares for her students. topics in the class are really interesting. definitely has changed the format of how her class is run compared to other reviews. you have a few readings that you have to do before class and then do a writing quiz for the first 10 minutes, so attendance is pretty much mandatory but she drops 3 of them. class is pretty much discussion based but the topics are very engaging, so i didn't have any problem participating. we had one art analysis and she was so considerate about other classes and would make sure we weren't stressing too much. would take this class again!
Renee Scott WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/12/2024	It is now week 12 of this course and Professor Scott has not put a single grade in Canvas. I have no clue how I am doing in this class but I go every day so hopefully, I will be ok. She is not the kindest, cancels class last minute a lot, and never answers any questions you have. Besides the professor, this class is actually ok to take. There are barely any out-of-class assignments or homework which is nice.

Taylor York WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/14/2024	Taylor York was a great Professor overall she was very caring and took pride in making sure the class understands the lecture materials. She also doesn't grade harsh and is very considerate. If your looking for a good elective to take I suggest you take this one with Taylor York you won't regret it.
Jaime Madden WGSS250 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 04/08/2024	friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming! this class covers a lot of difficult topics but she handles all of them respectfully and with care, one of the best teachers i've had the course material was interesting, and assignments weren't too difficult (short answers to questions before class sometimes, and 3 three-page essays)

Jaime Madden WGSS250 Expecting an A- akl2025 01/11/2024	Professor Madden is a good professor overall. Her classes are quite interesting and engaging. The course assignments involve a diverse range of activities (short written responses every week, 3 essays, 2 groups assignments, and a gallery visit), but she explains them thoroughly, ensuring students understand the expectations and requirements. She is responsive to studen's requests and feedback, so don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. It's worth noting that she adheres strictly to due dates and deadlines. Overall, I would recommend her to fulfill the DSHU gen-ed credit.
Michelle Rowley WGSS250 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 12/12/2023	This class definitely has a lot of work from the pre-class readings to reading-reflections to the insanely long final, but I think it was all worth it. Professor Rowley always made lectures really engaging and always managed to make the readings make sense and feel relevant. I definitely came out of the class having learned a lot that I can use in other areas of my studies and life with her focus on different frameworks and models of viewing art/the world. Especially with the change to a completion-based grading model, it is not that difficult to get an A (or a B by simply not doing as many assignments). Attendance is mandatory as participation is a part of your grade, so just be prepared to ask and answer questions in class.
Michelle Rowley WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/30/2023	This year professor Rowley made every assignment completion. So pretty much if you do the assignments you get an A. The work load is fair. She has weekly readings but i never read them because they were extremely long. You have to write three reading reflections within the year (you chose when you want to complete them) and that was the only time I looked at the readings. Her lectures are interesting and make it easy to get participation points.
Michelle Rowley WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 11/03/2023	im adding to my other review. she refuses to compromise with her students. she assigned us to go to an event that was required for the midterm, but it was in the middle of the day at a time other than our class time, which i had a meeting. after telling her i couldn't go, she refused to help me or even find a recording (which she could've done in the first place for students who couldn't make it). she also had this super weird point system that half the class couldn't understand and it made seeing my grade in the moment very difficult. again, don't take her class.

Super harsh grader, doesn't respond to emails even though its the only way to access her, doesn't post assignments on time and gets upset when she gets tons of emails. Not clear on directions, and almost impossible to get ahold of/know what your assignments are for that week.

I originally took this class to get an easy A but it is so much more than that. I recommend this class because you will learn things and consider aspects of life that you might not have ever thought about before.
Amira Lundy-Harris WGSS250 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/09/2023	One of the easiest classes you can take. Prof encourages class discussion off the assigned readings but never took attendance so you really don't have to go every time. There's a weekly discussion post (easy), a one page midterm paper (easy), a museum visit and a two page reflection (easy), and a 5-7 page final paper on a feminist music album (just annoying if you ask me). The reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because their lectures were brutal. Interesting stuff, but he never seemed that excited to teach and it felt pretty disorganized and pointless. This prof is definitely easier and more chill than others in this course though.
Michelle Rowley WGSS250 Anonymous 02/14/2023	I had to take this class because I needed a last minute gened that was online but i’d recommend you not take this class at all. Rowley is very rude and expects so much out of the class. She makes you log your participation throughout the class on a point system that’s extremely confusing and if you make a mistake, she gives you a snarky comment. She’s not understanding because even though i joined the class a week late, she was not helpful in getting me on track and rather took off points and told me i was wrong. I didn’t have my camera on for one small portion of the class and me and someone else in a breakout room were muted when she came in and she made a rude comment about us not talking. Don’t take this class. Definitely not worth the effort given it’s level and topic.

Jocelyn Coates WGSS250 Expecting an A rp6788 01/04/2023	Professor Coates is a great professor! She was always super understanding with absences and extensions and she always checked in on how we were doing. Every class is essentially a discussion and you need to read the given readings before class. I did appreciate that we had small discussion groups and then shared as a class. We also had 4 discussion posts and 2 essays (one was the final). Overall, I learned a lot from this class and would highly recommend it!

I also really liked the professor since she was very lenient about extending due dates and considerate of the students. I definitely recommend taking this class with this professor.

She cares so much about the material, is so understanding, and really wants us to learn about different perspectives. You do need to come to most classes and participate. There are 4 discussion posts and 2 papers that are easy to do well on. I would 100% recommend this class.
Caitlin Leach WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 10/28/2022	Super kind and respectful. While there is a decent amount of reading, she does make the effort of dropping certain grades in order to lessen the workload. The class is interesting, and she is really passionate in the topics. She takes super complicated topics and makes them accessible and interesting. All of the discussions are super inviting, although it helps if you participate. I would 100% recommend taking a class with her.
Jocelyn Coates WGSS250 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/17/2022	This was my favorite class by far this semester! As said in the previous reviews, the course load is not bad at all. She frequently allows students to share what's going on in their lives and wants to create an environment where people aren't overwhelmed. She is great with clarifying anything and gives extensions if need be. I also found myself loving the material more in this class because of the in-class discussions and feeling as though I was learning more than in any other class this semester. I 100% recommend.

Jocelyn Coates WGSS250 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/09/2022	LOVE this class and this professor. It is a great course that teaches important topics but it won't drown you in work. There are weekly readings, mandatory attendance, and some small participation activities in class but the work is pretty relevant to today's political climate and she is so flexible if you have conflicts or need an extension. There are 2 papers throughout the course and one of them is the final but she explains everything really well and is always ready to provide assistance if you ask. She really just wants her students to succeed. This was a really good class to lighten my course load but also keep me interested and engaged. 10/10 recommend.

I was going through a lot of personal issues during the semester, so I didn't turn in a lot of things on time. However, she was always understanding and willing to grant extensions for the projects (midterm and final essays), and even accepted all late homework assignments with no penalty. She really wants all the students to have a good experience. Even though I took this solely for a gened, I really enjoyed the topics/class discussions and learned a lot.

Some outside readings for homework but it never takes long and she goes over them in class. Class reflections every few weeks, one more artistic assignment, and two larger writing assignments, but nothing crazy. Definitely recommend for a gen ed. (she does take attendance/participation so show up tp class!)
Sina Lee WGSS250 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/10/2021	Extremely nice and personable. She creates a really nice and friendly environment in class which makes group discussions very nice and easy to participate in. Also, if you are a guy who is genuinely interested in this class but questioning whether you "should" take it, if you take it with Sina and put effort in she does an amazing job at not making you feel alienated. Though, she might make a few funny jokes about it throughout the semester. Overall very good experience that was not too demanding but also covered some interesting topics.

It is now week 12 of this course and Professor Scott has not put a single grade in Canvas. I have no clue how I am doing in this class but I go every day so hopefully, I will be ok. She makes you log your participation throughout the class on a point system that’s extremely confusing and if you make a mistake, she gives you a snarky comment. She’s not understanding because even though i joined the class a week late, she was not helpful in getting me on track and rather took off points and told me i was wrong. I didn’t have my camera on for one small portion of the class and me and someone else in a breakout room were muted when she came in and she made a rude comment about us not talking. Don’t take this class. Definitely not worth the effort given it’s level and topic.

Professor Coates is a great professor! She was always super understanding with absences and extensions and she always checked in on how we were doing. Every class is essentially a discussion and you need to read the given readings before class. I did appreciate that we had small discussion groups and then shared as a class. We also had 4 discussion posts and 2 essays (one was the final). Overall, I learned a lot from this class and would highly recommend it!

The class was self-led and there were about 3 assignments due every 2 weeks. The courseload is very light and a great elective to take. I also really liked the professor since she was very lenient about extending due dates and considerate of the students. I definitely recommend taking this class with this professor.

Absolutely love Professor Coates. She cares so much about the material, is so understanding, and really wants us to learn about different perspectives. You do need to come to most classes and participate. There are 4 discussion posts and 2 papers that are easy to do well on. I would 100% recommend this class.

Super kind and respectful. While there is a decent amount of reading, she does make the effort of dropping certain grades in order to lessen the workload. The class is interesting, and she is really passionate in the topics. She takes super complicated topics and makes them accessible and interesting. All of the discussions are super inviting, although it helps if you participate. I would 100% recommend taking a class with her.

This was my favorite class by far this semester! As said in the previous reviews, the course load is not bad at all. She frequently allows students to share what's going on in their lives and wants to create an environment where people aren't overwhelmed. She is great with clarifying anything and gives extensions if need be. I also found myself loving the material more in this class because of the in-class discussions and feeling as though I was learning more than in any other class this semester. I 100% recommend.

I did not like her at all graded it way too harsh and did not treat it like just a gen ed class, and I would not retake it or tell anyone else to take it, at least not with her; the course itself is fine she is the problem.

LOVE this class and this professor. It is a great course that teaches important topics but it won't drown you in work. There are weekly readings, mandatory attendance, and some small participation activities in class but the work is pretty relevant to today's political climate and she is so flexible if you have conflicts or need an extension. There are 2 papers throughout the course and one of them is the final but she explains everything really well and is always ready to provide assistance if you ask. She really just wants her students to succeed. This was a really good class to lighten my course load but also keep me interested and engaged. 10/10 recommend.

She's probably the most compassionate and kindest teacher I've ever met. I was going through a lot of personal issues during the semester, so I didn't turn in a lot of things on time. However, she was always understanding and willing to grant extensions for the projects (midterm and final essays), and even accepted all late homework assignments with no penalty. She really wants all the students to have a good experience. Even though I took this solely for a gened, I really enjoyed the topics/class discussions and learned a lot.

Very sweet professor and pretty accommodating. Material is somewhat interesting. Some outside readings for homework but it never takes long and she goes over them in class. Class reflections every few weeks, one more artistic assignment, and two larger writing assignments, but nothing crazy. Definitely recommend for a gen ed. (she does take attendance/participation so show up tp class!)

Extremely nice and personable. She creates a really nice and friendly environment in class which makes group discussions very nice and easy to participate in. Also, if you are a guy who is genuinely interested in this class but questioning whether you "should" take it, if you take it with Sina and put effort in she does an amazing job at not making you feel alienated. Though, she might make a few funny jokes about it throughout the semester. Overall very good experience that was not too demanding but also covered some interesting topics.

I really enjoyed her class and her teaching style. Because the class size was small it was easy to participate in group discussions. The work load is reasonable and she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities.
