The professor is very nice, and the quizzes you have to do every week are very short and easy. If you're interested in this class and its topics, take it. But I took it expecting it to be an easy, light gen-ed, which it was not. The readings are very long. There are multiple papers, which require around 1500-3000 words per, depending on the assignment (the TAs are pretty strict with grading these as well). If you want an easy class, I would choose something else.

Under no circumstances should you ever take ANTH265 with Dr. Hagan unless it is required. Over the course of the semester, we were given 5 papers to write, and they weren't very short either. It started at 3 pages, but then by the end of the semester the papers worked their way up in length and ranged from 6 to 10 pages on the final one. A vast majority of them we were either given no instruction at all on how to write them or the instructions were incredibly vague and hard to fully grasp. I consistently got 3.5/5 and 4/5 on them. They were only assigned starting at the midpoint of the semester so they were basically due back to back to back. In addition, we were quizzed weekly on the readings. 2 Questions each. If you got a single question wrong, it would drop your entire grade for the course by 2-3%, although they did drop the 2 lowest quiz grades, so at least that's a plus. Past reviews say his exams are easy. There aren't any (Anymore, at least). I genuinely would have rather taken exams than do 5 long papers one after the other. I took this class because I thought it would be an easy elective, but it ended up being one of the WORST classes I have ever taken at UMD. Do not take this.

I don't know why people are giving such high reviews. The professor was nice but he kept increasing the word count on the essays. The syllabus stated the essays are 1000 word maximum but he would release announcements after unlocking the assignments that he actually wanted 1500 words minimum. We ended up having to write four 1500 word essays instead of the four 1000 word essays I was expecting. The final paper also has a minimum word count of 3500 words so don't take this class if you can't write long essays. There's also six 250 word discussion posts you need to write but its pretty short. In terms of readings we usually get 3 to 4 readings a week that are 15-20 pages each. The quizzes are easy though and the lowest two scores out of the ten total quizzes get dropped which is nice I guess, but they're easy enough that you don't really need it.

Ok so I rated this a 5 because the class is SO SO SO easy. Professor is sweet and grades super easy. The largest essay is 750 words I think. She's also so accommodating. I got a week extension on an essay when I only asked for a day (I asked the day it was due too). Only downside is that the lectures were boring to me. The topics themselves were interesting but the teaching style wasn't really for me. It was mainly just her reading off the slides (Dr. Guevara if you're reading this I still think you're awesome). Overall, I definitely didn't regret choosing this class :).

This class is a very easy gen ed. Very free class very happy I took this class. The professor is kind of odd sometimes because she would threaten pop quizzes or extra homework if people didn't show up. However, she didn't actually go through with it. Theres only assignments the whole semester but they are a lot of work. I'd suggest to work on them 3-4 days before its due. It's not a lot of work and because they are separated throughout the semester its chill. For 3 gen ed credits this class is worth it.

Most people take this course for the 3 gen Eds it covers in one class. And when it's all said and done, you get those requirements with a fairly good grade if you try a little. I would retake again for those reasons alone, but did I enjoy the class? No, not really. Attending class is mostly pointless. Dr. G has a couple slide shows, but most topics covered in class are mostly rambling and putting up random words on a whiteboard. You just have to read as many assignments on the modules as possible to be able to do the assignments. Global health anthropology is kinda a woke topic, basically having intersectionality labeled as "social determinates" and the reason the world is unfair. Pretty easy to get a good grade when you just milk the topic of Reagan capitalism being bad, and socialism being good but hey, anything for the grade. To future students, skim the article under the gender and reproductive module that's called Abortion and Transgender Care. No joke, this article is gender Marxism. The victimized black, transgender, queer coalition must overthrow the cisgender male patriarchy. End police, release all prisoners, and of course end capitalism. Not sure what Marx would think of his ideology spun in this way, but I truly have not read anything crazier.

Ampson Hagan is very passionate about what he teaches. He clearly has a lot of interest in anthropology and his lectures accurately reflect that. The reading was easily the heaviest part of his class, often requiring reading of around 50-70 pages cumulative each week. Reading responses and recitation occurred almost every other week on that week's reading, and were not usually difficult. Participation in recitations is graded relatively heavily, but otherwise, his ANTH265 class is a breeze if you are good at reading and reflections (MCQs were comically easy). He's a great guy who clearly loves what he does.

All we did was attend 2 lectures and submit an essay every other week. I really like Dr. Hagan as a person, but he assigned a very heavy reading-load especially the first half of the semester and made multiple errors on his exams which was stressful for no reason. Otherwise, not a super hard class, just skim the readings and turn in all the work.

Pros: Prof. Hagan is very knowledgeable and does a good job trying to make his lectures engaging. The curriculum is pretty manageable (I'd rather have midterms than group projects) and the TA's were accommodating if you needed to submit the reading responses late. TBH, you don't really need to read all the readings to understand what's going on in the class / complete assignments so even though there are a lot of them it didn't really matter. Cons: The class is not really taught in a unbiased manner. Most of the content is approached / displayed in a liberal worldview which I expected as we're in college but was still disappointing. Prof. Hagan also had issues with incorrect answers on exams which he did correct but were annoying in the moment.

Dr. Hagan is a great professor who is very knowledgeable and well-versed in social justice and anthropologic issues. I found the lectures and course content interesting, topical, and engaging (even as someone not majoring in public health or anthropology). The curriculum is very manageable, so you will do well as long as you keep up with lectures, assignments, and readings. I recommend this course with Dr. Hagan!

Dr. Hagan is very nice and very passionate about Anthropology which makes his lectures interesting and easy to follow. The tests are all online and you have 24 hours to complete them. The reading responses are short and easy. There is a lot of reading assigned but you really just need to skim them and understand the main idea. Dr. Hagan is very understanding and lenient and I highly recommend taking him for this course.

She is a bit disorganized but if you take this class over the summer it doesn’t matter at all. Over the summer this was the easiest gened I’ve ever taken. If you are looking for an easy A gened, ANTH265 over the summer with her is a great choice for sure.

Dr. G structures her courses well, in my opinion. Sometime the course content of Global Health is drab, but Dr. G has a good energy. Do your work, she is not very lenient (not a bad thing, but an fyi).

Dr Gilchrist is a pretty decent professor, I don't have much to complain about. She makes her grading policies pretty clear and this class is very easy to pass/ get an A. Lectures are on the boring side, however, not all are necessary to attend, in my opinion.

I can't accurately predict my grade, because it is half way through the semester and only two grades are in. Her class is incredibly disorganized and heavily dependent on reading. The topic is already not interesting and they make it so much more difficult to pay attention their class (or even go to class for that matter). Most students have stopped showing up to class because she doesn't take participation points, and I'm genuinely convinced she still doesn't know our names half way through the semester. She is also disrespectful to her students when they have questions during class, which is frustrating. The only redeeming factor about this course is that we don't have any exams or quizzes. For that reason (and for 3 Gen Ed requirements), I would take it again. But I find it very difficult to think of any other benefits of taking this class.

Makes it about herself often, says being concerned about homeless people in an area makes you a bad person because you are "making it worse", denies science behind obesity and its affects on the organs. Claims Anthropologists know more about the state of global health than doctors and that doctors are the problem because of her own past. Course itself is easy enough, topics are pretty easy to make sense of but this style of professor is not fun.

She grades very harshly on some assignments and is extremally disorganized. She would put out assignments/discussions the night before they were due and you had to find time to do them. The syllabus also has wrong dates all over it and she refused to correct the dates so it can be very easy to miss an assignment or due date. The syllabus also had a list of all the assignments and their weight that we would have to do during the course and the list was completely wrong. The assignment descriptions were also very vague and there were no rubrics to see so it was very easy to do an assignment wrong and get a bad grade. Overall, If you like an organized class and like to time manage then this class will be a nightmare. If you can go with the flow then it probably won't be as bad but...

Dr. Gilchrest made this class extremely boring. She always seems to be disorganized and rambles on with no structure in her lessons. I swear she probably could've made the class 100 times better by including powerpoints, but no, you instead get rambles on the whiteboard and an absolute unnecessary amount of readings. The assignments aren't exactly easy either, and she is a pretty harsh grader. Class isn't too bad, but definitely take a different teacher if you can to keep your sanity.

This class is pointless and Dr. G is extremely boring. Luckily, the class is only once a week and requires very little work. Oddly, she graded our writing assignments much more harshly than expected, especially considering how long they took to complete. Take this class for the credit and the lack of work, but beware of basically a waste of time.

The professor goes into great detail of the class topics and makes us go see a deeper outlook in global health. Meetings were twice a week on zoom (as it was a summer online course) and there was a lot of assigned readings. Downside of the class was how we had less than 5 homework assignments, and the professor seems to be a bit picky in slight point deductions when making comments about how we answered the questions. There was two projects, however, she only graded the final project while the team project was never considered for grading, which made it a waste of time. The final project was fairly easy to complete since the requirements were straightforward. All-in-all, this course is good and the professor is decent. It would have been better if she graded both projects instead on one.

Fast paced (as expected of a summer course) but the weekly meetings really are a terrific way to dive deeper into the various class topics. I really enjoyed participating in her class as she poses questions that make you think about the state of global health. She's very hands-off but is an amazing communicator and gives amazing feedback on every writing assignment. I would definitely recommend as a professor.
