ANTH636
Norse Archaeology
Credit only granted for: ANTH436 or ANTH636. The archaeology of the Norse world from the 8th century through to the end of the 11th century. We will investigate the possible causes of the Norse expansion out of Scandinavia. The various settlements and colonies of Norse Russia, the Baltic, Britain, Ireland and the North Atlantic Islands (Orkney, the Shetlands, the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland) will be examined. While we will look at the Norse in detail we will also attempt to put their raiding, trading, and settlements into a larger Eurasian context through a study of the archaeology of this period.
