ARAB104 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/26/2023 |
obligatory review since the last review was over a decade ago at this point, but Lutf is genuinely one of the most caring college professors I've ever had. there was never a point in class where I didn't feel like he wanted us to learn the Arabic language, and he ensured that the 2 hour classes (which never felt like 2 hours btw) we had were full of Arabic practice, which is hard to come by outside of class time. this was honestly the first class where I was more concerned about learning than the grade that I got in the class (which he was also lenient with as long as you show genuine effort). for reference, I came into ARAB104 only knowing the alphabet and how to write/connect the letters together, but that was it. if you have to choose between ustadha Samah or ustadh Lutf, you can't go wrong either way |

Great Professor, very patient and supportive. Maybe he is the best language professor I have ever had. |

Good professor, very helpful when asked questions and pushed you to participate in class. The course materials and books on the other hand are very unhelpful with vague explanations and no examples to guide you. The books are probably the least user friendly books I have ever used for language instruction. |

Ustaadha Dina is awesome - she's really nice and generally good at explaining things and making everything interesting. Occasionally she didn't explain rules clearly enough, I think because she's a native speaker and doesn't always understand how hard it is for us, but this wasn't a huge problem. One thing to think about before choosing professors is what dialect you want to take. Dina is Egyptian so she works with the maSri (Egyptian) dialect in class. If I had thought things through more at the time, I would have taken Arabic with a professor who spoke the shaami (Levantine) dialect because that's what I want to focus on. Ustaadha Dina is a great teacher, but might not be what exactly what you're looking for if you know that you want to learn the Levantine dialect. She's a pretty harsh grader but I think that's true across the department; she just has very high standards (won't scale a test even if no one got A's), but she seems to be pretty fair in her grading. |
