Maryl Gensheimer
ARTH303 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/10/2025 |
Dr. Gensheimer is probably the best professor I've ever had at UMD. For context, I'm a CS major doing an Art History minor, so I'm nowhere near an expert in Art History, but this class was an amazing experience. Pros: - Dr. Gensheimer is really passionate and knowledgeable about Roman art and also has extensive experience in archeology, giving her a really unique perspective on some of the areas we cover in the class. - She's super nice and always happy to answer any questions that you might have. - The textbook and readings are actually pretty interesting, coming from a person who normally hates doing assigned readings. - The writing assignments are really short (max 500 words), just be sure to be thorough and consider the wider implications of the readings - The midpoint project is to redesign a UMD building to make it more Roman, which was fun! She's super flexible about how you want to go about it (I did modeled mine in Blender, and some students did photoshop or sketches) - You don't have to memorize any dates or places of origin for exams like I had to do in ARTH200. You just need to have a good historical knowledge and understanding of the works and their functions. - The first two-thirds of the year is super interesting, as you go through the Roman emperors chronologically and examine works from each of their time periods. Cons: - Honestly not much at all. If I had to pick something, it would be that the last third of the semester feels a little slower paced and less organized than the first two thirds, since the class deviates from the chronological timeline and goes into special topics (e.g. Roman bathing, Pompeii, women, tombstone works). However, there are some really cool areas in this third that I liked, and we did a really fun activity at the end too, which I won't spoil. I would 100% recommend her as a professor! |

The class was very challenging, especially the exams. You have to memorize a lot of facts and the tests are on paper. If you study hard and dedicate time to this class you will do well. The professor was great. She does her best to help you succeed in the class! I would highly recommend her as a professor. |
